Save energy and money while gaming? Why you should definitely go for AMD's X3D Ryzen CPUs

The AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D™ CPU is currently one of the best gaming processors on the market. And performance is not its only selling point – it's also efficient. We'll explain why the AMD 3D V-Cache™ technology makes Ryzen CPUs from AMD absolute powerhouses

Everything is getting more expensive nowadays. The multifarious instability of the global situation causes a relatively high inflation and increasing energy costs. At the same time, video games don’t stop to become increasingly demanding, and players keep wishing for highest possible frame rates.

More power unfortunately often entails more power consumption. That's not always the case, however, as Ryzen CPUs prove. AMD managed to squeeze more performance with less power consumption thanks to the AMD 3D V-Cache technology.

Again, a variety of circumstances make hobbies like gaming more expensive. Those who do not want to give up gaming altogether can try and save resources with the exceptionally powerful and efficient AMD Ryzen X3D CPUs.

What is the AMD 3D V-Cache technology?

The actual technology behind it is called Hybrid Bond 3D. AMD refers to its version as AMD 3D V-Cache technology. In simple terms, it's a technology that interconnects several chips. This increases the overall bandwidth for data transfer by adding more connection points and allows for better heat management.

The foundation for the technology lies in the Van der Waals forces known to all physicists and the more dedicated nerds. This technology enables stacking of memory chips, resulting in higher cache storage capacity for processors. This ensures that the CPU doesn't need to increase in size and doesn't require additional cooling to achieve higher performance. With this solution, the X3D CPUs have become efficient powerhouses.

How exactly does the AMD 3D V-Cache technology increase FPS?

When a game accesses content in L3 cache, it takes just eight to ten nanoseconds (a second has an entire billion of nanoseconds!). If content needs to be loaded from RAM, it takes considerably longer. The advantage of a CPU's level-3 cache is its incredibly fast access time. And as AMD 3D V-Cache technology provides much more memory, adequately more content can be loaded from it. This, in turn, leads to reduced latency and shorter waiting times.

How does power consumption work in CPUs?

Basically, the power consumption of processors, like other components in a gaming rig, depends on the load they're subjected to. A CPU that's constantly using 90% or more of its capability consumes accordingly more power than one that's using 20%.

Of course, there are differences in efficiency among the processors from various manufacturers. Some consume significantly more energy than others. For gaming in general, CPUs typically consume 100 to 200 watts. AMD X3D Ryzen series processors sometimes dip significantly below the 100-watt mark. They're not only fast, but also extremely efficient.

Depending on the situation, you can save over 100 watts of power consumption on the CPU alone. Over a year, with the right usage, you could save a hundred bucks or more.

AMD X3D Ryzen CPUs power consumption

Power consumption in watts. The smaller the number, the better, (CPU uses less watts for performance).

In addition to the extremely popular AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU, there are also a few X3D models in the new AMD Ryzen 7000 processor lineup. So, in the GameStar Tech Test, the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU shows just how efficient it is. Compared to other CPUs, you can save up to 150 watts depending on the app.

More performance with lower consumption

You can see the lower consumption in the power usage benchmark. It’s especially impressive because the AMD Ryzen 7 CPU also comes out on top in the GameStar gaming benchmark, as you can see below.

So, in games, this CPU is not only the fastest but also the most efficient, as the author Nils Raettig is amazed to point out: "It effortlessly combines the lowest power consumption in our test field with the highest performance in our games at 720p resolution – outstanding!"

Advantages of AMD X3D Ryzen CPUs

  1. Higher L3 cache, leading to significantly more performance.
  2. Very high efficiency. Unsurpassed performance per watt score.
  3. In combination with an AMD GPU, other great benefits include AMD Smart Access Memory™ technology and AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution.

More Performance: The AMD Ryzen CPUs with AMD 3D V-Cache technology can deliver more power thanks to larger L3 cache compared to other CPUs. So, the pure gaming performance, especially in Triple-A games at 4K resolution is a big plus of the CPU. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU was already the best gaming processor, and as you can read in the GameStar Tech Test, it's been replaced by the Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU.

Efficiency is everything: Very high efficiency is an important advantage of AMD CPUs. As seen in these benchmarks, the AMD processors impress with their strong efficiency. The X3D-CPUs can surpass that once again and offer even more. This can allow for saving electricity and, in extension, money. In addition, you will be well-equipped for years to come with a processor that's both very powerful and efficient, sparing you a quick upgrade.

The perfect combination of GPU and CPU: Combining their AMD Ryzen CPU with an AMD Radeon 6000 or 7000 series graphics card can enjoy even more benefits, such as AMD Smart Access Memory technology. It allows the CPU to utilize the full memory of the graphics card instead of, as usual, only a small part of it.

In addition, with an AMD Radeon GPU, you will have access to AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, an image-scaling technology. The graphics card can calculate the game internally at a lower resolution and then scale the image up to the native resolution of your monitor. There's no visible loss of quality, but you get a very strong performance boost, which is reflected in significantly increased FPS.
