Arhn.eu has prepared a feature-length documentary film about the history of The Witcher games. But it was a long road until CD Projekt RED brough us The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, one of the most important RPG games of the recent years.

Although Geralt’s story came to an end more than a year ago, CD Projekt is still making a lot of money from the sales of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its two add-ons: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine (all included in the Game of the Year Edition). According to the Polish company’s most recent financial raport, CD Projekt had an income of about $72 million (PLN 254.8 million) in the first half of 2017, which translated to net profit of $33.5 million (PLN 118.6 million). The lion’s share of that money comes from the sales of The Witcher 3 and its expansions. The raport also gives a time window for the release of Cyberpunk 2077.

The Witcher 3: The Sands of Ofir - fan concept for a new expansion

CD Project RED is not planning any more expansions for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but maybe they’ll change their mind when they see this concept for a DLC designed by a fan, a computer graphics school graduate from Russia named Alexandra Tokaryuk. The Sands of Ofir, as the project is called, tells a story which starts after the events featured in the base game and its two original expansions. The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project mod gets a huge update

If you haven’t yet, now is the perfect moment to grab The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project, as the mod has received the biggest update so far. This fan-made project really makes a differenece for the looks of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The high-quality textures pack adds incredible detail and depth to the game and makes it look much like the famous Sword of Destiny E3 2014 trailer. The best part is that the mod has little to no impact on the game’s performance.

The Witcher 3 composer might be back for Netflix series

Mikolai Stroinski, co-composer of the amazing soundtrack from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt might be contributing to the Netflix TV series announced last month. This isn’t confirmed news, but we imagine he didn’t just pay a courtesy call to Netflix HQ. Note also that one episode in each season will be directed by Tomasz Baginski, the producer of most of The Witcher trilogy CGI animations. And don’t forget that the very creator of that universe, Andrzej Sapkowski, will serve as a creative consultant.

$9,400 – that's what CD Projekt RED paid for the Witcher license

We now know how much CD Projekt RED paid Andrzej Sapkowski for the rights to make a Witcher game – it was PLN 35,000, which now stands for about $9,400. That was not so much more than the ridiculously low sum that Metropolis had paid a couple of years earlier, the only difference being that the latter failed to complete their project. Of course, that was still quite much back then for a small Poland-based studio that was just making their first steps in gamedev, but considering the dividends they are reaping now, that was peanuts.

The Witcher writer believes the games spoiled his sales; Metro 2033 author strongly disagrees

Andrzej Sapkowski, the creator of the Witcher universe, not only doesn’t like video games, but also fails to see how much popularity his novels have gained thanks to the electronic adaptations made by CD Projekt RED. Quite the contrary, in a recent interview with Waypoint, the Polish writer expressed a belief that for every reader he gained thanks to the games there is another he lost. Adressing that comment, Dmitry Glukhowski, author of the Metro books, called the man “an arrogant motherf***er”.

The Witcher 3 is not the last we've seen of the franchise

It is unlikely that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the last big game set in this fantasy universe. Although Geralt’s trilogy is over, CD Projekt RED admitted there is a good chance that they will create another AAA Witcher title in the future. That’s not surprising, especially when you consider that the series moved 25 million copies so far. As much as we'd like to see another Witcher game though, it probably won’t happen very soon. While this year belongs to Gwent, the next big project for CDPR is Cyberpunk 2077.

The Witcher universe creator diminishes the game franchise's success

Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher Saga author, is having a hard time when it comes to recognizing the value of the gaming community, and the developers as people whose work contributes to his novels’ success. Rather than that he prefers to attribute all the marbles to himself, portraying both the gamers and the developers as ungrateful groups feeding off his genius and trying to drag his heritage away from him.
