11 Best-selling Strategy Games Ever

How to check the popularity of a title? The best indicator is by the number of copies sold. This time we look at strategy games.

Table of Contents

2. RollerCoaster Tycoon 3

  1. Developer: Frontier Developments
  2. Year: 2004
  3. Estimated number of copies sold: over 10 million

The team responsible for Jurassic Park Evolution are real veterans of virtual park management games. Long ago, before they started dealing with dinosaurs, they delivered a production in which roller coasters played a major role. In RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, we built our own amusement park and large roller coasters on which squealing passengers rode on and on. Compared to the two previous installments, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 introduced 3D graphics to the series, which was a real innovation at the time. Moreover, the camera was finally freed from constraints, allowing you to view the park from every angle.

The game received great reviews, which of course translated into sales results. There isn't any data regarding the figures at the time of the release – all we know is that the game ranked 9 on the bestselling titles list. In 2015, Frontier Developments CEO David Braben, while advertising the new installment of the series called Planet Coaster at E3, mentioned that RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 had sold over 10 million copies overall, in part because it was designed to utilize technological progress gained in the field of PC gaming. However, it is very likely that this is the combined result for all editions and platforms on which the "three" was released.
