In the 90s adventure games divided and conquered. One of the more interesting titles released in the second half of the decade is Beneath a Steel Sky. It’s a futuristic crime noir story taking place in dystopian Australia. Players assume the role of one Robert Foster - a man raised by the natives from interior. His tribe is killed and he is kidnapped by LINC assault squads and then taken to Union City, a futuristic metropolis.
While on the run, the protagonist discovers the disturbing truth about the world surrounding him. The game was quite large for its time, and it was one of the first productions to ever use the Virtual Theatre system that simulates citizens’ lives - around one hundred characters. Yes, the same system that governed an iconic RPG developed by Piranha Bytes.
HOW WELL DID IT AGE?
Very decent, I must say, provided you’re fine with, oh so typical for those times, not always logical puzzles and a lot of pixels befitting contemporary games.
