Remember that climactic hack'n'slash from 2002? The game garnered good reviews among critics and to this day enjoys a large following. A few years later, a sequel was also developed. And a film directed by the players' favorite. The one and only, Uwe Boll.
With a budget of $60 million, the film only grossed $13 million worldwide. Financially, it was a complete flop. It's difficult to say exactly what the money was spent on. The cast was certainly expensive – it starred Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, John Rhys-Davies, Ron Perlman, Matthew Lillard and Kristianna Loken. However, if anyone can be praised, it's only the supporting cast. The stars seem to have realized what they'd decided to partake in, and they quickly spit out their lines without unnecessary ado, mechanically going through the motions.
I won't discuss the plot, because any link to the – otherwise quite interesting – story from the game can be spotted only by Boll's most loyal fans. At the same time, the film is riddled with technical shortcomings, and it generally looks like a basement-produced hackwork. Costumes were terrible, as were special effects.
Does the movie have any merit? Well, apart from the supporting cast, there are some decent panoramic shots. That's about it.
Uwe Boll wasn't happy with torturing fans with Dungeon Siege for more than two hours. Although he lost the rights to the video game franchise, so he just deleted two words from the title, added number two at the end, and that was it. Moreover, he persuaded Dolph Lundgren himself to participate. Although the film garnered even worse reviews than the original, Uwe wasn't going to rest on his laurels: a few years later, he completed In the Name of the King 3: The Last Mission, arguably, his opus magnum. Believe it or not, this might be the worst movie he made.
