Analysis of The Witcher Series Trailer - Another Netflix Hit?

Finally! We have seen the first trailer of The Witcher series by Netflix. We invite you to read our detailed analysis of this two-minute teaser trailer.

Table of Contents

Potions and first monster of the week

Geralt vs potions and… kikimora?

The last scene of the trailer shows two important things. First of all, Geralt has used a lot of potions – he does look pretty scary, as described in the story of The Witcher (dead pale complexion, pupils filling whole irises, etc.). The monster emerging from the swamp is also a good thing – it is most likely a kikimora. Geralt delivers its corpse to Blaviken at the beginning of The Lesser Evil.

Sorcerers and wizards

Here is Istredd, a sorcerer who's quite close with Yennefer.

Please meet Triss Merigold.

Aretuza – sorcerer's academy, located at Thanedd.

Tissaia de Vries.

Although Sapkowski has not yet paid much attention to them in his short stories, there are many sorcerers and wizards in the trailer. Tissai de Vries, Yennefer's mentor, has made numerous appearances. Also, Istredda can be spotted (could he play a bigger role in the series than in A Shard of Ice?), Triss and Fringilla Vigo – the latter is particularly interesting, as the heroine was originally introduced in later books. It is not surprising that Aretuza, the wizard school on Thanedd Island, appears in the trailer. Although it has not been mentioned in the stories at all, Netflix will need this set design for the adaptation of Time of Contempt.

Driads

Ciri among the driads in Brokilon.

Probably many of you have been surprised by Brokilon. Many book fans expected that the driads will look unusual, maybe even exotic, but did anyone expect "amazons" with dark complexion, probably inspired by Indian and Caribbean culture? It is a very interesting move by the producers.

Urcheon of Erlenwald

Urcheon of Erlenwald

We're moving on to special effects. First of all, Ciri's father, the enchanted Duny. He doesn’t make a great first impression. On the other hand, was there any other way to visualize his curse due to which he owes the nickname of the Urcheon of Erlenwald?

Cheap CGI and a bit of cringe

It's Geralt or Fabio (Google it!)?

Invasion of Nilfgaard.

Fans of video games were probably pleased with the most iconic scene with Geralt from The Witcher 3 – the one in the wooden bath tub. Fortunately, we can't see the White Wolf soaking in water on the trailer. A little controversy (once more) has been induced by the Nilfgaard armor. Also, numerous scenes look a bit displeasing, where you can clearly say that they were shot with the use of green screen – like those in the aforementioned Brokilon. But maybe the post-production for the premiere will polish it a lot.
