Awesome Brand New Shooters That Embody the Spirit of the 90s.

Players prefer to shoot in open-ended worlds, but they used to traverse complex mazes full of secrets. Doom-like games have greatly evolved, but as it turns out, new shooters inspired by Quake, Hexen or Duke Nukem 3D are still being created.

Ziggurat

  1. Release date: 2014
  2. Producer: Milkstone Studios
  3. Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Ziggurat is a roguelike dungeon crawler, but thanks to the action seen from a first-person perspective and the high pace of the game, the whole thing looks like a modern-day version of Heretic and its sequel, Hexen. Aside from guns, our hero can use magic wands, canes, and various types of magic projectiles. We move around the eponymous ziggurat, a religious building from the regions of Mesopotamia. Our hero is a great sorcerer, eager to prove his worth by killing hundreds of monsters, in a manner similar to Serious Sam.

Levels are filled not only with enemies, but also randomly-generated pick-ups, scrolls that increase our power, and elaborate traps. Ziggurat doesn't necessarily attempt to invoke a 90s feel with its graphics. The visuals are colourful and really pretty in its slightly comic style. Even if the graphics are encouraging, the game is really difficult, and requires a lot of skill and patience, mainly because of the permadeath mechanic.

  1. More on Ziggurat

The most famous real ziggurat is the one that originated in the ancient city of Ur. It exists to this day, although it was damaged during the 1991 war, and it is not easy to visit because it is located on the territory of present-day Iraq.
