The Best Strategy & RTS Games of 2021 - Editors' Choice

Although the golden era of strategy is gone, it does not mean that the genre has completely died. 2021 proves that fans can still find at least a few productions worth attention.

Table of Contents

1. Humankind

  1. Developer: Amplitude Studios
  2. Platform: PC
  3. Game summary: a beautiful alternative to the Civilization series with daring innovations

Humankind is a game that has become more and more controversial over time. Its great debut has been slowly obscured by complaints about bugs, balance issues and some of the bold choices made by its creative developers. However, this doesn't change the fact that the work of the French studio Amplitude is probably the most interesting production on this list.

The reason is simple - it's the first title in many years that has dared to compete directly with the Civilization series that rules this niche genre. Of course, Humankind didn't manage to dethrone the king, but it was able to survive the confrontation, which is no easy feat. Especially considering that this production is a great game indeed.

The French developers took inspiration from the best aspects of Sid Meier's games and enhanced them with their own creative ideas. They put a lot of emphasis on the military aspect and changed the ways in which you conquer new territory and expand cities. Also worth highlighting are the temperamental AI and engaging nation development mechanics. Moreover, this game looks like a dream. Anyone who at least once built a charming little village by a waterfall will understand what we mean.

For these reasons, it's worth giving Humankind a chance. Especially since we already know that in time this production will develop into an entire game series. Over the years, it has the potential to become the fiercest rival of the Civilization series.

The game's biggest pluses:

  1. interesting nation development system;
  2. permanent one more turn syndrome;
  3. beautiful graphics.
