The Best Strategy & RTS Games of 2021 - Editors' Choice

Although the golden era of strategy is gone, it does not mean that the genre has completely died. 2021 proves that fans can still find at least a few productions worth attention.

3. Wartales

  1. Developer: Shiro Games
  2. Platform: PC
  3. Game summary: an open world tactical sandbox with RPG elements

Wartales is another production from the Shiro Games studio, which some time ago produced the best Settlers-type game of recent years, namely the excellent Northgard. These French developers definitely know how to make strategy games. This time, however, they decided to spice up things a bit by adding some RPG elements to the mix.

In Wartales, we lead a group of mercenaries who travel the world ravaged by plague. Your only goal in these dangerous times is to survive. In the course of the game, you explore small villages, carry out numerous tasks and collect loot to help you progress further. You need to constantly improve your characters' skills and craft new items for them.

Combat takes place in a turn-based system on smaller maps. It requires strategic thinking and mastering the various skills available to your mercenaries. This type of gameplay should appeal to fans of titles such as XCOM or Battle Brothers. The developers also made sure to equip the game with a beautiful soundtrack.

The game's biggest pluses:

  1. an open world full of secrets;
  2. difficult tactical combat;
  3. a beautiful soundtrack.
