Dark Horses 2021 - Unexpected Upcoming Video Game Hits

2021 certainly promises a number of high-profile games, very hyped and strongly advertised. Next to them, however, will be more obscure games, which may turn unlikely candidates for the game of the year title. Here is our selection of such games.

Table of Contents

Everspace 2 – conquering space

  1. Why are we waiting: the game looks more ready than Star Citizen
  2. Release date: 2021 (early access)
  3. Genre: space simulator
  4. Platform: Windows PC

Star Citizen is still raising millions of dollars, No Man's Sky has finally turned the corner, Star Wars: Squadrons delighted despite its modest content, and Elite Dangerous is still popular. So why are publishers afraid of space simulators? There is still room on the market for new games featuring space exploration and battles taken straight from the Star Wars universe. Everspace 2 has a chance to arouse a lot of interest, especially since the third-person perspective and a bit more arcade take on dogfights suggest no need to buy expensive joysticks.

Players can also count on unique classes of ships and their modding, flying over the surface of planets and trading items in space stations. You will be able to test all this at your own pace, without the pressure of others, because Everspace 2 will not feature an online mode, only a single player. It promises to be a bit more accessible game about conquering the space with more arcade mechanics.

Dark Envoy – non-linear RPG

  1. Why are we waiting: it's an RPG from Poland, inspired by, among others, Mass Effect
  2. Release date: 2021
  3. Genre: isometric RPG
  4. Platforms: PC Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Dark Envoy is an RPG created by the Polish studio Event Horizon – the creators of the well received Tower of Time. Players get to follow the fate of siblings, Kaela and Kiros, who travel in their parents' strange aircraft through unknown lands. The authors were strongly inspired by BioWare's games, such as: Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The strongest asset of Dark Envoy is to be a rather non-linear plot.

Our choices will affect how the story will proceed and which of the many endings we eventually get see. A single playthrough will allow you to experience only some of the attractions prepared by the creators. The player's decisions are also said to shape the procedurally generated dungeons, which they will get to visit apart from the main locations. The game will also feature a turn-based combat with a special phase in real time. Moreover, it promises to deliver a quite original multiplayer mode, in which one gets to play as the final boss to bother the other player. We will see how it will turn out in practice.
