Resident Evil 3

  1. Developers: Capcom
  2. Release date: April 3, 2020
  3. In a nutshell: evil Umbrella corporation creates a monstrous giant zombie-like creature which wants to kill the heroine of the game

In result of a lucky streak Capcom is once again loved by the players. First of all, the company revealed a new Monster Hunter, then successfully returned to Raccoon City by releasing a remake of Resident Evil 2, and lastly released the fantastic Devil May Cry 5. The Japanese have completely insulated themselves from DmC: Devil May Cry (a reboot of the series released in 2013 which received rather mixed reviews) which was developed in cooperation with Ninja Theory. It means that we had to wait eleven years to know the true fate of Nero and Dante. Due to the enthusiastic reception of RE2 Remake (which received mostly rave reviews), we rather expected that the creators will treat us with a remake of the next installment, but no one suspected that this may happen so fast – in April, 2020.

Resident Evil 3 is probably the most obscure and least popular game among the main installments of the series and, according to opinions of some critics, it's the worst part as it duplicates many ideas and mechanics from RE2. In the latter, players encounter a powerful enemy called Mr. X, who was replaced by Nemesis in the third part of the franchise (which is actually a bit strange, because Nemesis should have been a female character instead of a man). That Nemesis is another huge beast, created in the laboratories of the Umbrella Corporation. The concept of this character was designed during the development process of RE2 – it served as one of the proposed versions of Mr. X. However, game designers have discarded this idea.

The Capcom creators are probably aware that this time they are working with content that lacks valuable potential, because they have already announced that they will implement various changes in particular sections of the game and some characters may get more screen time. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Capcom will once again manage to deliver a more exciting game than the original.

The creator of the series, Shinji Mikami, protested against calling this game as third installment, claiming that the Resident Evil: Code Veronica designed for Sega Dreamcast platform should be considered as the real third part of the series. According to him, the game should have been labeled with a number of 1.5, because it didn't advance the story of the franchise in any special way. However, since this production was created with the PlayStation in mind, Capcom decided to maintain the numbering order. After its release on Sega Dreamcast, Code Veronica was also released on PlayStation 2 a year later.
