The Best Contemporary Video Game Series

We love excellent games, but we love excellent series even more. Here is our editorial selection of the best (active) video game series.

Table of Contents

5. Baldur's Gate

  1. Developer: BioWare, Black Isle
  2. First game release year: 1998
  3. Number of main installments: 2 + 2 Dark Alliance games (as well as the separate Siege of Dragonspear expansion, which was a actually a separate game )

Baldur's Gate will forever remain synonymous with the classic role-playing game. The isometric view game, based on the Dungeons & Dragons system, was probably something like The Lord of the Rings among the books at the time. It took us into a world of extraordinary adventure in a fantasy setting that was swarming with righteous and filthy characters, with dragons, magicians, bustling cities and mysterious ruins. During the expedition, the whole team was important, which we remembered also thanks to the colourful heroes.

The Baldur's Gate series is not particularly rich in major installments, but with various expansions and improved versions there has always been something to play and something to return to. The game on the famous Infinity Engine has also inspired other great titles – such as Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment. With such a well-remembered past, the upcoming third part of the series will on the one hand offer the unusual feeling of returning home but on the other hand it will have to live up to the nostalgic memories of its most loyal fans. Fortunately, the chance that the creators of the equally successful Divinity series will step up to the challenge is pretty high.

We're not gonna lie here. You guys like Baldur's Gate and I like Baldur's Gate. What's there not to like? The first installment revived the genre along with Fallout, and Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn is just a beautiful, monumental game that ages nicely. It has great quests, memorable companions, engaging plot, beautiful locations, and one of the best designed cities in RPG history. I'm completing it for the 11th time.
