The Best Contemporary Video Game Series

We love excellent games, but we love excellent series even more. Here is our editorial selection of the best (active) video game series.

Table of Contents

1. Uncharted

  1. Developer: Naughty Dog
  2. First game release year: 2007
  3. Number of main installments: 4

In the first place, perhaps without much surprise, the Uncharted series. Naughty Dog doesn't release games very often, but when they do, they try to make them an unforgettable experience. And Uncharted is exactly that. Each installment of the series is like an action adventure film from Steven Spielberg's greatest days. It's a quality guarantee in itself. We can be sure of great plot, engaging gameplay, surprising moments and spectacular views. We play for several, several hours, and it seems like a fast ride you complete with one breath without looking at the time.

And then there are the characters. Nathan, Elena, Sully and the rest. Well-crafted characters that we like from the beginning, who we root for every step of the way, who seem like flesh-and-blood people, not computer avatars holding a virtual joypad-controlled rifle. Boy, in Uncharted, even the pirate who died centuries ago, whose treasure we are chasing, has such personality and charisma that you want to study his history! It's a series of games that allows you to experience adventures, not just watch them. And still in the best company.

Uncharted's shoot-out and exploration gameplay can be liked or not, and squeezing the last juices from the console can be enjoyed or passively charmed. But Nathan Drake's charisma and interactions with Elena, Chloe and Sully make you just want to accompany them on more crazy adventures, listen to verbal banter and cheer their fates – the magic of the series lies in its characters.
