The Best Contemporary Video Game Series

We love excellent games, but we love excellent series even more. Here is our editorial selection of the best (active) video game series.

Table of Contents

8. Final Fantasy

  1. Developer: Square, Square Enix
  2. First game release year: 1987
  3. Number of main installments: 15

We're not quite sure how to count the "main series" of Final Fantasy. If you have a different vision and, for example, consider the latest remake to be a full-fledged part of the series, then remember that is absolutely your right.

Ffffff! You either acknowledge the Final Fantasy phenomenon and play it, or you don't! It's a series that’s over 30 years old, it sold more than 100 million copies, and got a few Guinness Book records. Each part is an epic in itself, because it tells a different story, introduces different characters, even takes place in a different world. However, we always oppose evil here in some form, and our strength is the team as a whole and the strong relationships between its members.

Like The Legend of Zelda, the Final Fantasy series features the evolution of computer graphics and various gameplay mechanics. FF games are generally known for their excellent soundtrack and artwork, appropriate to the period in which each game was released. Interestingly enough, many game rankings place Zelda and Final Fantasy alongside each other as series of all time. With such publicity and a rich selection, with the recently released "seven" remaster in the lead, I don't think there is any excuse not to get acquainted with this series!

Final Fantasy VII from 1997 was a game that made me discover that games can have a storyline and tell a story. A series that, admittedly, has had some mishaps, but at the end of the day has been running uninterrupted for 33 years. 33 years! This series is almost older than I am, and that already deserves recognition.
