The Best Video Game Animals - Cats, Dogs, and Dragons We All Love!

Vibrant companions are an integral part of many video games. We experience the bitterness of betrayal, euphoria, tears of emotion with them. But not all of them are human. Animals also make for valuable companions.

Table of Contents

Dogmeat, Mabari, or maybe Amaterasu?

  1. Creatures: dogs
  2. The most famous members of the genus/species: Dogmeat, Mabari, Amaterasu
  3. Games in which they appear: Fallout, Dragon Age: Origins, Okami
  4. Cuddle-worthiness: generally very high

Dogmeat is not the only dog that shows up in the wastelands. In fact, in the first and second parts of Fallout, we meet many more of them on our way. However, neither the unlucky dog nor its cybernetic buddy have become players' favorites. Although Dogmeat is different in each installment, fans of the series become just as attached to it. And no wonder. Not only is the dog quite resistant to gunfire (considering its lack of armor), but it also returns the protagonist's kindness with a lifelong devotion. It follows the hero to the nastiest places in the wastelands, rips enemies to shreds and looks simply adorable with its mouth slack.

Dragon Age builds the player's bond with Mabari from the very beginning. I'll never forget one of the prologues where the cook blames our dog for making a mess. It turns out that the faithful pet wanted to protect us from an attack by huge rats. After such a start, it's impossible not to fall in love with the dog, which may not be ultra cute, but is really droll. It's a shame that its participation in the gameplay is reduced to the role of a summoned animal later in the game. Hopefully, we'll see the due return of Mabari in part four, which currently in-development.

However, not all game dogs are as connected to humans as Dogmeat or Mabari. Amaterasu from the visually stunning Okami is more wolf than dog, and more a deity than animal. The mighty Amaterasu is not so much a companion to the protagonist – she is the protagonist. However, she qualifies here thanks to guest appearances in several other productions. And we're really glad. I wouldn't forgive myself if I didn't at least mention the character that evokes such positive memories.

Companions, who always land on their feet

  1. Creatures: cats
  2. The most famous members of the genus/species: Daffodil, Palico, Midnight
  3. Games in which they appear: Spiritfarer, Monster Hunter series, Fran Bow
  4. Cuddle-worthiness: so high that their meowing threatens to destroy the whole universe... provided, of course, the cat feels like it

Daffodil from Spiritfarer can change colors. By default, however, he is an adorable blue-eyed kitten with vanilla-colored fur. The cat always accompanies the main character, Stella, helping her find the ghosts, which in turn help her get to the other side of the "river." Interestingly, it can be controlled in co-op mode. But if you choose not to, it's hard to get past its endearing feline behaviors like playing with a spherical artifact the cat received from Charon himself.

In the Monster Hunter series, cats are the animal equivalents of MacGyver himself. They offer more than just combat abilities. They can travel to hunting grounds on their own, carry equipment, bury themselves in the sand in case of danger, and sometimes even help us with healing dust. And if we add to this the expressive character of each Palico, we get some of the best companions in gaming.

Midnight is the cat of Fran Bow, from a game of the same name. Due to metaphorical nature of the story and the number of surreal scenes, we can't be sure whether she is merely a figment of the girl's imagination, a ghost, or perhaps an animal possessed by our adversary. However, the latter is hard to believe – after all, Midnight has been helping Fran almost from the very beginning. When the girl suffers and experiences further nervous breakdowns, the cat is always there to support and comfort her. And sometimes, it even acquires key gameplay items itself.

STRAY

All cat lovers be reminded that in 2022, an unusual cyberpunk action game called Stray will be released, in which we will have the opportunity to play the adventurous puss. The developers will allow us to experience typical feline parkour, establish relationships with the robots inhabiting a futuristic city, and fight against threats lurking in the dark and toxic sewage. Let's hope Annapurna Interactive delivers once again.
