Jurassic creatures in non-Jurassic times
- Creatures: dinosaurs
- The most famous members of the genus/species: Yoshi, Camptosaurus, Chrome Dino
- Games in which they appear: Super Mario World, Adventure Island series
- Cuddle-worthiness: low to negative
Although today dragons seem to be superseding dinosaurs in the virtual space, a dozen years ago, the screens (and hearts) of players were captured by Yoshi, on which Mario rode in the hit game for SNES. Introducing a cute lizard into the universe hit the bull's-eye. Yoshi became a mandatory member of future editions of the series as well. It's all thanks to gameplay solutions that make it a faithful companion of Mario (or Luigi). Players therefore become much more attached to him than to Toad or Princess Peach, who usually only appear briefly.
Dinosaurs were also the driving force behind the Adventure Island series for the NES console. Although in the first part, the protagonist had to do without their help, starting from the iconic part two, traversing the lands became easier thanks to the dinosaurs. The two most popular of these are creatures that roughly resemble a camptosaurus – one blue and the other one red. The biggest treat was finding the pteranodon in a big egg, which made it possible to quickly beat almost every map. The worst helper, in turn, usually turned out to be the elasmosaurus – although it was the only one able to move in water, its size was more often a hindrance than help. In part four, a triceratops joined the team. And although this installment of the series was in many ways not as successful as the previous ones, it also found a group of devoted fans. Mostly just because of the adorable dinosaurs.
Speaking of virtual lizards, it would be a sin not to mention the Tyrannosaurus from Chrome Dino. Sure, he's the protagonist of this game, but in a way, he's also the companion of almost every internet user. Especially when the connection is not working properly.
More than an animal
- Creatures: mystical, magical, one-of-a-kind creatures
- The most famous members of the genus/species: Tsushima foxes, Trico, Boo
- Games in which they appear: Ghost of Tsushima, The Last Guardian, the Baldur's Gate series
- Cuddle-worthiness: high for friends, low for strangers
The foxes in Ghost of Tsushima are unusual animals. If the player manages to follow them long enough, they can try to tame them. And discover the treasures they're searching for. They most likely act as a sort of guardians of the forest. And they're a great easter egg, by the way. While designing them, the creators winked at the fans of Skyrim, who once claimed that foxes lead them to treasures. This turned out to be half-true, as their wandering was due to an error in the game, although they very often directed the player to markers.
Trico from The Last Guardian is hard to classify as any particular species. It a bit of a dog, a cat, a lemur, a rat, and a bird. However, it behaves more like the former, avoiding the Boy at first, and then, when the latter brings him food and takes care of him, following him at every step. Trico doesn't hesitate to risk his life in his defense and almost sacrifices it in the end. When we see him for the last time, it is impossible to hold back tears of emotion. Trico's fate is more gripping than the adventures of many a human protagonist.
Every Baldur's Gate fan is not only familiar with Boo, but also knows very well that he is actually a powerful space hamster. And while for the longest time, it seemed that Minsc has simply gone mad, believing his tiny companion to be a powerful being from beyond Earth, it eventually turns out that he was right. That's not really important, though, because Boo is just the sweetest companion. Even if he doesn't say anything, doesn't fight, and rarely reveals himself. Can you even imagine Minsc without his hamster?
