Kards Description
Kards is quite an original card game, which was released in a free-to-play model. The title is set in the reality of the Second World War and uses propaganda graphics and music from the 1930s and 40s. The production also offers a few fresh ideas in the gameplay mechanics. The game was developed and released by the independent studio 1939 Games (founded by former CCP employees). It is the studio's debut project.
Plot
The Second World War was a conflict considered by historians to be the greatest one in history. Warfare began on September 1, 1939 with the aggression of the German Reich (the Third Reich) on Poland in Wielun, and then on the Westerplatte peninsula. Historians estimate that over 50 million people died in the conflict.
Mechanics
Kards is a classic card game in which you play a game with a rival controlled by another player or the in-game AI. Your task is to destroy the enemy base, which requires the use of different units and maneuvers represented by each card. As the game progresses, you also expand your own deck, thanks to which you gain access to a wider range of games.
The game designed by 1939 Games studio stands out with its several interesting ideas. First of all, everything players do during the game costs them virtual money, which is supposed to symbolize the fact that war is extremely expensive. It is not only about playing the cards but also about moving them or attacking the opponent - the cost depends on the type of unit. Secondly, on the table, there is a central field - the so-called front - for which both rivals are fighting. The cards of both players can be placed here and many types of units can only attack an enemy base of this order (although there are also some that are not subject to similar restrictions - e.g. artillery or air force).
In the game one can control one of several nations, such as Great Britain, Japan, USA, Russia, and Germany. Each of them has its own distinctive cards.
Game modes
In Kards one can play alone (against AI) or with others, but the basis of the game is the online multiplayer mode.
Technical aspects
Kards offers interestingly designed, two-dimensional visuals consisting mainly of illustrations on the cards and a quite simple game board, reminiscent of a wooden table. The production uses real propaganda graphics that appeared on posters during the Second World War. One's playthrough is also accompanied by an atmospheric, jazz soundtrack.
