Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight Description
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is the fourth installment in a series of 2D side-scrolling platformers, released for PC, XONE and PS4. Story-wise, the game is a prequel to the previous three titles (Momodora I, II, and III), the first two of which came out via itch.io as freeware applications. The development of Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight was handled by Bombservice studio led by the creator of the series: Rdein. The title’s publisher is Japanese company Playism, which specializes in indie games.
Plot
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight tells a story of a young priestess named Kaho, whose home village Lun falls victim of a dark curse, which slowly spreads over the entire realm. Equipped with a bow and a huge, deadly maple leaf, Kaho travels to the capital of the country – the city of Karst – in order to ask for an audience with the queen, who might know a way of stopping the curse. Upon her arrival at the city, however, a horrible truth comes to light…
Mechanics
Released for PC, XONE and PS4 Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is a representative of 2D platform games, in which action is presented from the side-view camera and gameplay comes down to fighting your way through a string of locations filled with enemies. Dynamic battles with enemies are an important aspect of the game. The two types of weapons available in combat are: a huge clone leaf used for melee combat (it behaves just like an ordinary sword or any other melee weapon) and a bow – your ranged weapon, which you can “charge” in order to shoot several arrows at the same time. Besides, your character can roll over on the ground in order to dodge enemies and attack them from behind (which is especially useful when fighting enemies with shields).
Apart from these mechanics, standard for platform games, Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight features sone minor RPG elements, evident in the character slots for items of active and passive effects. The active items can be used whenever you like (e.g. when you need to restore some health), while the passive increase the heroine’s statictics or grant her new abilities.
Technical aspects
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight was created with GameMaker: Studio program. Just like it was in previous installments in the series, this game too features pixel art graphics, however, this time characters and environments are more detailed than before. The artstyle chosen by developers combined with simple sound effects an impression of dealing with a 1990s’ game.
