RimWorld (PC)
RimWorld (PC)

9.3 Game Score

A strategy game set in a science-fiction world in which we supervise an extraterrestrial colony. It has been developed by debuting independent studio Ludeon, established by a former employee of Irrational Games, who previously worked on the Bioshock series. The story of RimWorld takes place in a future in which humanity colonized many alien star systems, but they are located so far from each other that their inhabitants cannot count on anyone, but themselves. We take command over a small group of survivors of a colony space ship, with our task being to maintain the development and provide safety to our base. Aside from building structures and gathering food and resources we must assign each colonist with a task adequate to his or her skills. RimWorld features a unique complex tactical combat system and three independent AI systems that – depending on the situation – will generate random story arcs, making sure to maintain a proper level of drama throughout the gameplay.

Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (PC)

9.2 Game Score

An official expansion pack for the third installment in the series of classic RTS games set in a fantasy world and developed by Blizzard Entertainment since 1994. The story of the expansion is set in the world of Azeroth, several months after the battle for mount Hyjal. The plot here is centered around the trials to find Ner'zhul - the lord of the Undead, who has remained inside a frozen tomb in Northrend. The players receive four new campaigns for each of the four available races. However, the Orcs' campaign (separate from the main branch of the plot) deserves to be given special attention, because it lays the groundwork for the planned World of Warcraft MMORPG. It is worth noticing that all the parties involved in the conflict received new characters with their unique skills, as well as new types of units. The player is now capable of hiring neutral heroes and building stores selling magical equipment. Additionally, the expansion introduces new items, buildings and upgrades related to them.

Battle Brothers (PC)
Battle Brothers (PC)

9.2 Game Score

A combination of a turn-based strategy and an RPG, developed by Overhype Studios. Battle Brothers takes the player to a medieval-like low-fantasy world, where they become a leader of a mercenary band. The player can have up to 12 fighters under their command, and each of them has a portrait, name and a backstory, apart from a set of features that affect their stats and capabilities on the battlefield. The game does not make use of character classes, thus the player can assign weapons bought or taken from the enemies without any restrictions. The basic weaponry includes a set of medieval tools, such as swords, spears, axes, bows or crossbows. Different kinds of weapons offer interesting special attacks - for instance, axes can break shields; maces on the other hand, can stun the enemy so they lose their next turn. On their path, both when completing assignments and exploring the world, the player encounters various enemies, fighting ordinary bandits, hostile mercenaries, forest creatures, tribes of orcs and goblins, as well as the undead and terrifying ghosts. If the player manages to survive for long enough, they are faced with one of the ending crises. Those include an invasion of orcs and goblins, a plague of the undead, and a war between the local noble families.

Dungeon Keeper (1997) (PC)

9.0 Game Score

An innovative real-time strategy game set in a fantasy universe. Dungeon Keeper was created by Peter Molyneux’s Bullfrog Productions, the studio known for the Populous and Syndicate series. Unlike many dungeon crawlers popular in 1990s, Dungeon Keeper does not put you in the shoes of an adventurous hero, instead letting you play as a demonic lord of dungeons. Your main task is building an expansive net of dungeons and defending them from raiding heroes. To achieve this you have to put up various fortifications, set traps, and fill endless corridors with armies of monsters. At the same time you have to keep an eye on your economy, by looking out for new deposits of gold and diamonds, needed for dungeon expansion as well as recruiting and training of your warriors. Dungeon Keeper offers a single player campaign made up of 20 main missions and 5 extra missions, each one with specific objectives. The game also offers 4-people multiplayer with 15 dedicated maps. Gameplay uses isometric view, which is typical of the RTS genre.

Myth: The Fallen Lords (PC)
Myth: The Fallen Lords (PC)

9.0 Game Score

A tactical RTS set in a fantasy realm, developed by Bungie Software, a seasoned developer present since 1991. The game, loosely inspired by the setting of Glen Cook's The Black Company series, lets us play the part of a commander of the Army of Light, leading our armies to battle the forces of darkness led by powerful sorcerers, the eponymous Fallen Lords. Unlike most typical real time strategy games, Myth: The Fallen Lords ignores the resource gathering aspect, as the gameplay focuses entirely on skirmishes with enemy troops. Moreover, with each successive victory the surviving warriors gain experience, becoming more powerful and allowing us to win the fight even against a seemingly overwhelming enemy force. An undisputed advantage of the production is its fully three dimensional environment and a physics engine, whereby the outcome of clashes is affected by various external factors, and most objects present on the map can be used in battle.

In the game you meet an old acquaintance - Jim Raynor. Deemed a rebel, now he fights with Zerg forces, who seem to be interested in a mysterious artifact. He also encounters the powerful and mysterious race of Protoss. In comparison with the prequel, gameplay mechanics did not go through any drastic changes, allowing the authors to focus on new, upgraded visuals, multiplayer mode enhancements, and other minor modifications. Single player campaign allows the player to complete the available scenarios in any order and freely choose which technologies to develop. Furthermore, between the missions you can explore the world, talk to non-player characters, and use their services.
