Tekken 5 (PS2)

Another installment in one of the most popular series of fighting games developed for years by Bandai Namco Entertainment. In the fifth edition of King of Iron Fist Tournament a set of well-known fighters makes its appearance alongside three new ones (Asuka, Raven and Feng). Each character has their own motivation and goals, which constitutes the background for spectacular duels. Tekken 5 employs the well-known mechanics of its predecessors. As usual, the features four types of strikes (weak/strong punch, weak/strong kick) intuitively assigned to gamepad buttons. Combat takes place on three-dimensional arenas, where several interactive elements can be found, such as walls, columns or statues - these objects can be used in combat. Apart from the main tournament, Tekken 5 offers various game modes, such as versus, training or the adventure mode requiring the player to fight his way through waves of incoming enemies.
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (PS2)

Another installment in a series of fighting games developed by Spike. The franchise was based on classic manga series by Akira Toriyama and takes the player to the titular Dragon Ball universe dominated by masters of different various martial arts. The game offers over 150 fighters representing different races, such as the Saiyan (Goku, Vegeta), inhabitants of the planet Namek (Piccolo), humans (Tenshinhan, Krillin) or androids (#17, #18). Each of the characters has a unique set of attacks and special abilities. Moreover, many of them are capable of transforming and accessing new, more powerful attacks by doing so. Fighting takes place in 20 in-game locations and particular arenas can be visited both in daylight and when it is dark. What complements Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, are high-quality visuals that remain faithful to the art style Toriyama has been popular for.

Another installment of fighting game series created by Dimps Corporation, based on the license of a cult-classic manga created by Akira Toriyama. The players can assume the role of the most popular characters from the series, re-living the greatest events that took place in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT series. While taking part in spectacular duels, we make use of not only advanced melee skills, but also of a wide range of special attacks, drawing from Ki power. Additionally, developers introduced four new attacks (Teleportation Counter, Teleportation Tornado Combo, Dragon Rush Attack, and Bukujutsu Flight Mode), while the player has freedom to decide where he wants to go next, accessing side adventures that yield extra experience. Aside from the story mode, called Dragon Universe, the game contains gameplay variants that are based on duels with competitors controlled either by the AI, or by other players. The game sports visuals that are based on original manga’s style, while the voice actors known from the series assume the role of the individual characters.

Another fighting game created by Dimps studio, based on the cult-classic manga created by Akira Toriyama. The mainstay of the game are the “Dragon Missions”, where we have the opportunity to take part in the events that weren’t used in the Dragon Ball Z games up to now – for example, Goku’s adventures during his stay in the afterlife. A number of different heroes were left at our disposal – aside from the aforementioned Goku, the game roster contains Vegeta, Trunks, or Piccolo. In all, we can take control of one of forty characters, each having different attacks and special abilities. The trademark attack – Kamehameha – is also on the list. The whole game is complemented by high quality visuals, faithful to the manga’s visual style.

The players assume the role of characters known from the series — among the 23 available ones we can find Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Trunks. Every one of them has a different set of attacks, special combat abilities and energy attacks, including the iconic Kamehameha. For the money we earn while playing, not only can we unlock additional fighters but also enhance their offensive capabilities with new, powerful elements. Story Mode remains at the core of the game. In it, we can take part in the most important duels from the animated TV series — starting from the fight against Freezer to the final battle against Cell. Fights take place in nine varied environments inspired by battlefields featured in the original, including the temple of Kami or the Chamber of Time. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai also offers a tournament mode, duel mode, and a special training mode that lets us hone our skills. The game features colorful three-dimensional graphics inspired by the works of the Japanese mangaka and high-quality dubbing — characters are voiced by the actors from the American version of the animated TV series.

Developers from Namco took care of a more effective visual setting of their work and introduced a number of changes in the mechanics of the game. The novelties include pair fights, additional heroes in which you can take on the role and new costumes for warriors.
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 (PS2)

A continuation of the popular fighting game, taking place in the universe created by Akira Toriyama. Once again, Dimps Corporation is the developer responsible for the title. The players once again participate in spectacular duels, assuming the roles of characters known from the animated original. The newest addition to the series is a rebuilt single player mode, called “Dragon World”, where the protagonists travel around the map in search for the titular Dragon Balls. Along the way, they encounter various enemies that are battled on different arenas. Additionally, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 contains Duel and World Tournament modes – the former allows the player to choose his opponent and leaves him the choice of the arena, while the latter introduces a series of encounters that are played as a tournament. It should be mentioned that we can either go solo, competing with the AI, or invite another player. The cel-shaded visuals are undoubtedly a mainstay of the game, paying tribute to the works of the legendary mangaka. The game introduces the ability to import your character from the previous installment.

The gameplay focuses on spectacular duels, taking place on fifteen different arenas – to emphasize the power of our heroes, we can now use or destroy many elements of the environment. We are left with over a 100 playable characters, including Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and many more. Each of the fighters has a unique fighting style and dozens of moves, with another plane of possible attacks unlocked with the transformation system. Aside from dedicated single-player modes, the developers introduced a number of multiplayer variants. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 is characterized by high quality visuals, faithful to the style presented in the original manga.
