Rising Tide is the first expansion for Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth, a 2014’s turn-based strategy game for PC. It was developed by Firaxis Games, the creators of the core game. The studio also created such titles as Alpha Centauri and XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Mechanics

One of the biggest novelties offered by the add-on is the possibility of expanding at seas and oceans. Therefore, we are no longer limited by the coastline while planning our empire. The developers allowed the players to build settlements on the surface of the water and to acquire resources from underneath it. Moreover, we can even create a fully functional state at sea alone. Such expansion involves completely new threats, though, since the depths of alien planets are inhabited by dangerous monsters.

The second major change regards the diplomacy system. In Rising Tide, it is more dynamic and takes into account all our actions up to the point of negotiations. Leaders of other civilizations also have more extensive personalities that are influenced both by their history and the current geopolitical situation. For example: with his back against the wall, an opponent that used to be peaceful can start to wage war.

Other mechanics were also altered. In Rising Tide, we aren’t limited to three doctrines from the vanilla game anymore. Instead, we can combine ideologies into a kind of hybrids that give us access to new units, among other things. The artifact system was revamped, as well. Now, we gather and bind together the remains of alien civilizations.

Moreover, Rising Tide for PC comes with two new bioms – one of the is a primitive world, still undergoing formation, shaken by volcanic activity. The developers also implemented four new factions. These include, among others, Al Falah, founded by nomads that come from the Middle East.
