Unchained Blades
UnchainBlades ReXX
Release Date: July 14, 2011
Unchained Blades is a dungeon-crawler cRPG game for which the FuRyu development team led by Toshio Akashi is responsible. The plot takes the player to a world full of magical creatures, in which, as dragon emperor Fang, he has to face the insidious goddess Clunei. The game was originally released on the Japanese market under the title UnchainBlades ReXX.
Unchained Blades Description
Unchained Blades, released on PSP and 3DS, is a joint venture of Japanese industry veterans - Toshio Akashi (creators of the Lunar series) and Takashi Hino (known from the Grandia series), who, with the support of several well-known cartoonists (including Pako, Toshiyuki Kubooka, Shinichiro Otsuka, Kazushi Hagiwara) and development studio teams of FuRyu corporation decided to prepare a classic cRPG dungeon-crawler production.
Plot
The action of the game is set in a magical world, inhabited by various types of monsters. Emperor Fang, the main character who lost his dragon powers, embarks on a dangerous crusade to take revenge on the insidious goddess Clunea and regain his former form. He is accompanied by other characters, such as the cowardly golem prince or a medusa girl, who also want to settle the score with the deity.
Mechanics
In the course of the game, players control the actions of a team of up to 4 heroes (selected from 13 playable characters). The action is observed from the perspective of the first person (FPP), and as befits a real dungeon-crawler, the fight takes place in a turn-based system.
The creators made sure that the fights were not limited to the mutual exchange of attacks, but contained a large dose of strategy. The solution called "unchain system" allows, with a bit of luck, to save the opponent's life and join the group as support or cover. Interestingly, each team member can have 4 beasts, which provides a large number of combinations.
Technical aspects
Unchained Blades is characterized by a two-dimensional visual setting, maintained in the style of anime. Between traveling through successive underground locations, the player can follow the plot by watching cut-scenes in the form of classic animations.
