GamingTrend: 75 / 100 by Devo Deaves
Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf is a good tactical challenge marred by frustrating mechanics, questionable graphics and dodgy controls. But I had fun with it nonetheless and the card system differentiates it from other turn-based strategy games. Ultimately, your enjoyment may depend entirely on whether or not you have any prior interest in the Warhammer 40k universe.

With so little effort put into making Space Wolf feel like it actually belongs anywhere near the new systems, it’s hard not to be anything but disappointed and cynical about this release.

On paper I think the idea behind the mechanics for Space Wolf could be interesting...
Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf Description
Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf for PC, AND and iOS offers a turn-based, tactical experience enriched with elements of RPGs and card games; it was created by HeroCraft - a Russian developer. As the very title suggests, the game is based on the license of Warhammer 40,000 - a universe created by Games Workshop as part of their tabletop miniature wargame popular in the entire world.
Plot
The player assumes control of the titular squad of Space Marines, whose ship has fallen into a trap of Chaos Space Marines from the Word Bearers legion. The vessel has had a tough landing on the surface of the planet Kanak - a world inhabited by barbarians and serving the role of an outpost for the sworn enemies of the player-controlled characters. The team has to face the threats waiting for them here and begin the fight for the glory of the Emperor.
Mechanics
Fighting the adversaries constitutes the core of the experience. Combat is turn-based here; during particular encounters, the player makes use of cards gathered on their path. The deck allows the player to perform different actions while fighting, such as movements or attacks with weapons additionally described by different statistics. The larger and more diverse one's card collection is, the more possible tactics can be applied. The cards give the player access to both special skills and an extensive weaponry - hundreds of weapon types can be found here apart from the Boltgun and Chainsword, which are iconic parts of this universe. In the meanwhile, one can go to the forge, where they can upgrade their cards.
Selection of a character at the beginning of each mission is what also affects possible strategies one could apply. Furthermore, subsequent new characters join the player over time as well. Alongside progression, the player-controlled soldiers advance to subsequent experience levels, gaining special perks in so doing - those provide them with advantages on the battlefield.
Game modes
Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf for PC, AND and iOS offers several game modes. Obviously, the story campaign is the core component - the player gets acquainted with a complex storyline and gradually ventures deeper into the game world. Apart from that, one can try out a competition-oriented multiplayer mode, which places up to 6 players in one session (divided into teams of three). This multiplayer component is complemented by the Survival Mode - the players eliminate subsequent waves of the chaos cultists here. Interestingly however, this last mode gives the player unique rewards for subsequent victories.
Technical aspects
Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf for PC, AND and iOS casts the player into a three-dimensional environment. Though the visuals make a good impression on mobile devices, the PC version looks average at best.
