Wii U is the 8th generation console from Nintendo and a successor to Wii. It was released almost all around the world in November 2012. Wii U had many new features (with GamePad controller on the top of the list) and significantly better performance, but it didn’t manage to repeat the big success of its predecessor; actually, it wasn’t even close. That’s why less than 3 years after the release of Wii U the world began to spread rumors about the console’s successor, initially codenamed NX.

Shovel Knight is a classical 2D platform game with elements of adventure and RPG, set in fantasy world. The title is a debut of the independent studio Yacht Club Games, hiring, among others, former employees of the experienced Way Forward studio. In the production, we impersonate a titular knight who, with the help of a legendary shovel-like weapon, fights the mysterious members of The Order of No Quarter. Traversing subsequent locations, our hero faces scores of enemies, including difficult bosses. Interacting with certain elements of the environment, he solves series of puzzles, facilitating the completion of a given level. Gameplay is modeled after classic platform games like Mega Man and Castlevania. Its old-school character is emphasized by pixel-art graphic design. The game lets you play alone or in a local multiplayer mode for up to 4 players.

Shovel Knight: King of Cards (WiiU)
Shovel Knight: King of Cards (WiiU)

Arcade 2018

The last expansion to a well-received game titled Shovel Knight. Both the add-on and the base game have been developed by Yacht Club Games. The main protagonist of the expansion is the titular King of Cards, who is one of the bosses a player has to fight as the Shovel Knight in the base game. The main protagonist has to prove his rights to the crown by defeating three usurpers from the neighboring lands. Similarly to the base game, Shovel Knight: King of Cards is a 2D platform game with RPG elements. The new hero fights and moves in a different manner than the previous protagonists - he mounts a short charge, which stuns the enemies and destroys some of the obstacles on the map. He also has a special ability - he can perform a pirouette on enemies' heads multiple times. As one progresses through the story, he acquires more powerful weapons, armor, and new companions. An interesting element of the game is the minigame, in which one can play cards with NPCs. The gameplay revolves around the story campaign, which is well complemented by special challenges, in which one can test his skills in platform puzzles as well as combat.

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows (WiiU)
Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows (WiiU)

Arcade 17 September 2015

A free expansion to Shovel Knight, a well-received platform title developed by Yacht Club Games. This time, the players received a completely new hero – Plague Knight, who is known for being one of the antagonists in the base game. After his defeat at the hands of Shovel Knight, the fledging protagonist decides to leave his former allies and embark on a journey in search of ingredients necessary for creation of a mysterious, powerful potion. The gameplay of Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows is almost completely the same as its predecessor. We are given a mix of an action game, RPG, and a platform game – the game focuses on exploration of two-dimensional levels, and facing the encountered enemies. The new hero forces the players to develop completely new tactics – even if most of the journey takes place in reused locations, the new hero is not equipped with the trademark shovel – he makes use of bombs and short-distance flying. The list of novelties is complemented by new enemies and bosses.

Soul Axiom (WiiU)
Soul Axiom (WiiU)

Logic 29 September 2016

An adventure logic puzzle FPP game created by Wales Interactive, and a spiritual successor to Master Reboot. The story of Soul Axiom takes place in the far future, when death is no longer a problem and people are mass-uploading their souls into a server called Elysia, where all their fantasies and dreams come true. However, something went wrong during the upload process of the protagonist's soul, and when he finally arrives on the “other side,” he no longer remembers who he is and how he ended up there. Your task it to discover, step by step, his story, which you do by exploring the world and solving puzzles. The game features 40 unique locations and over 100 varied puzzles, whose solutions involve mostly using the laws of physics and manipulating the environment. During the gameplay you gain a range of abilities, which come in handy when trying to solve the puzzles.

The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup (WiiU)
The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup (WiiU)

Arcade 08 December 2015

An original 2D platformer with adventure elements, developed by Gory Detail, an independent studio established by Christopher Seavor, formerly an employee of Rare. The main protagonist is a forgotten and somewhat broken toy resembling a dog that has a wheel instead of paws. The player’s task is to take care of it, which is done in a rather unusual way because we do not have direct control over the toy, but we can influence its behavior by manipulating the environment. The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup is characterized by a pretty dark atmosphere, although not completely devoid of black comedy. On the technical side, the title uses a number of characteristic capabilities of the Nintendo consoles which translates into innovative control solutions, among other things.
