Last Epoch is an action RPG developed by independent studio Eleventh Hour Games. The title was developed thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

Story

Last Epoch takes us to the fantasy land of Eterra, which is devoured by a dark force called the Void. In order to ensure their survival, its inhabitants hid in an underground city. Fortunately, not everything is lost - the main character, who is one of the survivors, goes in search of the title artifact, which will enable him to travel in time; traversing four different incarnations of Eterra, the hero not only discovers the secrets hidden by the realm but also finds a way to stop the Void.

In addition to the four main epochs (ancient, divine, imperial and ruined), over time we have the opportunity to check out their alternative versions, which we find through the so-called Monolith of Fate so that we can continue the game even after the main plot is completed.

A versatile build system allows for experiments with deep skill trees and unusual crafting mechanics - but after the initial excitement of creating those builds, momentum fades.

COGconnected: 83 / 100 by Mark Steighner

Last Epoch straddles the midpoint between familiar accessibility and depth. There is plenty enough character customization to reward experimentation and repeated play. The basic, addictive ARPG loop is compelling, even if the narrative is a bit muddled. Once past the first few overly familiar hours, Last Epoch starts to really come into its own as an excellent hack-and-slash with lots of potential and staying power.

The main pros of the game

  • Accessibility and Approachability: Last Epoch is praised for being easier to pick up compared to complex ARPGs like Path of Exile (PoE), making it a great choice for casual players.
  • Deep Character Customization: The game offers a robust skill and passive tree system that allows for a high degree of build flexibility and experimentation without severe penalties for mistakes.
  • Crafting System: The crafting mechanics are described as rewarding and intuitive, striking a good balance between randomness and control.
  • Satisfying Combat: Players appreciate the fast-paced and visually satisfying combat mechanics, which feel impactful and engaging.
  • Engaging Endgame Content: The Monolith of Fate and other endgame systems provide meaningful challenges and rewards, respecting players' time.
  • Offline Mode: The inclusion of an offline mode is a significant plus for many players, allowing for stable gameplay without internet issues.
  • Active Development: Continuous updates and improvements from the developers are noted, with a community that feels supported and listened to.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Endgame: Many players express that the endgame can become monotonous after a while, with a lack of variety in challenges and rewards.
  • Performance Issues: Reports of performance dips during intense moments, especially with large skill effects or enemy mobs.
  • Limited Narrative Depth: The story and campaign are viewed as underwhelming, lacking engaging narrative elements and depth.
  • Gold and Itemization Issues: Gold is considered largely useless, and there are complaints about the itemization system, particularly regarding the crafting of uniques and sets.
  • Meta Dependence: There is a noticeable power gap between builds, with some being significantly stronger than others, leading to a reliance on meta builds for optimal performance.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Character Customization Options: Users desire more options for customizing character appearance beyond the current offerings.
  • Variety in Endgame Content: Suggestions for more diverse affixes, map types, and rewards in the Monolith of Fate to combat repetitiveness.
  • Improved Narrative and Campaign: A call for a more fleshed-out story and deeper narrative experiences within the campaign.
  • Enhanced Visibility and Feedback: Issues with visibility during combat and feedback on damage taken are noted, with players wanting clearer indicators of their character's health and status.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Some players suggest enhancements to inventory management and crafting processes to streamline gameplay further.

Summary

  • Overall, Last Epoch is seen as a solid entry in the ARPG genre, especially for those seeking a balance between casual play and depth, though it does have areas for improvement based on user feedback.
