Read Only Memories: Neurodiver is a continuation of cyberpunk visual novel with adventure elements - 2064: Read Only Memories. In the sequel, players take on the role of ES88 and look for a villain with extraordinary mental abilities, who sows confusion in the subconscious of the inhabitants of Neo-San Francisco. Similarly to the previous installment, the game was developed by The MidBoss.
Plot
The action takes place in the cyberpunk town of Neo-San Francisco, known from the previous installment. Players assume the role of the ES88 telepath, employed by the powerful MINERVA organisation specialising in neurotechnology and sensory projection. Connection to the Neurodiver device gives the opportunity to immerse in the memories of others in exchange for the loss of one's own identity. This allows ES88 to track down the villain Esper, also known as Golden Butterfly, who wreaks havoc in the subconsciousness of the city's inhabitants.
Mechanics
Read Only Memories: Neurodiver is a combination of visual novel and point-and-click adventure. With the power of ES88, players move through the memories of others, identify them, manipulate them, and unlock information that will lead them to the trail of Espera hiding among them. However, if one's interference is too great, they can irretrievably damage the memory of that person.
In addition to traveling through the subconscious, players explore the familiar and new locations of the colourful Neo-San Francisco. They encounter familiar faces, such as the TOMCAT hacker, the genetic hybrid Jess Meas, and Lexi Rivers, a former police officer.
Read Only Memories: Neurodiver has several endings depending on the choices players make in the game.
Technical aspects
The game delivers pixelart visuals saturated with vivid colours and maintained in retro style; the atmosphere is emphasized by the soundtrack.
