The cancelled project was supposed to be Criterion’s biggest game to date.

An untitled extreme sports game by Criterion, first announced at E3 2014 is no longer happening, as GameSpot learned from Electronic Arts. The creators of the Burnout racing game series as well as a couple of recent Need for Speed games are currently lending their hands to Star Wars Battlefront VR project. The studio is also working on a new IP for the publisher, but there is no information on what IP that might be. Here is EA’s official statement on the matter:

While they've moved on from the previous project they've spoken about and aren't pursuing it, they are continuing to build new ideas and experiment with new IP for EA, in addition to continuing to collaborate with other EA studios.

The statement doesn’t specifically mention cancellation, but it is unlikely that the works are going to be resumed. The project was supposed to be Criterion’s biggest game to date and feature a wide range of vehicles, including helicopters, ATVs, planes, jet skis, wingsuits, etc. Fortunately, fans of extreme sports have yet another title to look forward to: the recently announced Steep from Ubisoft. We hope it won’t share the fate of its would-be rival.
