Lovely adventure game Night in the Woods coming out in January

Can talking cats and other animals go together with mature topics like transience and fragility of life? Night in the Woods proves they can. This lovely Kickstarter-funded adventure game is launching in a couple of weeks.

After two years of delays, Night in the Woods – the interesting, nostalgic indie adventure-platformer, which was overwhelmingly successful on Kickstarter back in 2013 – is finally coming out next month. The game will launch on January 10, 2017 on PC (Windows, Linux), Mac and PlayStation 4. Watch the new trailer:

Night in the Woods is going to tell a story of a college dropout Mae Borowski, a young feline girl, who comes back to her home town and old friends, only to discover that life has moved on. Everything Mae knew is different now, and some strange things start happening in a nearby forest at night.

Despite using light cartoonish stylistics and animal-like characters, Night in the Woods touches on mature topics of transience and fragility of life. Besides, the title combines various game mechanics, including adventure, platformer, and arcade – it even has knife fights and Guitar Hero-esque strumming.

If you’re interested, you can now feel the tone of Night in the Woods by playing Lost Constallation, a free, short supplemental game set in the same world – available for download on itch.io (thanks, Rock Paper Shotgun!).
