Dune Legacy is a open source implementation of of Dune II: Battle for Arrakis (also known Dune 2: The Building of a Dynasty), created by Dune Legacy Team. It’s not full free game, as you still need Dune 2’s files.

It tries to be as similar as possible to the original gameplay but to integrate user interface features most modern realtime-strategy games have like selecting multiple units

Dune Legacy vs. OpenDUNE

There are two major open-source versions of Dune 2. Which one is best for you depends on what you want. OpenDUNE's aim is to allow playing the original game on modern OSes without emulator, and allow programmers to build on the engine. However, the OpenDune project itself adds no updates besides some minor bug fixes.

The Dune Legacy project aims to not just reproduce the original, but also improve it. Because of that it implements features like multi-unit select, right-click to move or HD/widescreen resolutions.
