Divinity: Original Sin for PC is the prequel to the 2002 series of RPGs by the Larian studio. The Belgians decided to reach for the classic solution: the gameplay is shown in an isometric view, while combat is turn-based.

The game is set before the events of Divine Divinity, allowing the players to more fully fathom the mythology of the cycle, and meet many old friends again, such as magicial Arhu, beloved by fans, before he was turned into a cat. Original Sin also prepares the ground for the third (in terms of numbers) game in the series, expanding on the unresolved themes from the previous games.

In the game we assume the role of two young hunters who must explore the secrets of forbidden magic and counteract its effects. They both soon discover that they share a kind of inexplicable bond that makes them exceptional and destined for something bigger.

Divinity: Original Sin is likely to be an extremely polarizing game. While many hardcore RPG fans will love its old-school style and fans of innovation in gaming can find a lot to love in its creative character interaction and environmental damage systems, it also presents gamers with a tough ride right out of the gate.

Twinfinite: 5 / 5 by Tony D'Ambrosio

Overall, Divinity Original Sin is a fantastic game. There is variety in weapons and abilities, and choices in the ways you solve your problems. The world is full of life: Every corner of the world has treasure, or curiosities like a bull that can tell your fortune, or even a severed head that still speaks. The combat is fun, with elemental effects turning large battles into sort of a puzzle, with your spells and abilities being just half of the pieces. The story isn't as engaging as say, Baldur's Gate II, but it's still serviceable in support of such fantastic gameplay hooks

Game Revolution: 4.5 / 5 by Anthony LaBella

Fans of old-school PC RPGs that don't hold the player's hand and focus on depth and freedom will adore this game. Audiences without that experience will also find something to love in Divinity: Original Sin, because depth and player freedom never become dated.

The main cons of the game

  • Bugs and Stability Issues: The game suffers from glitches that can disrupt story progression and gameplay.
  • Difficulty Balance: Some builds can become overpowered, leading to a lack of challenge, especially in the later stages of the game. Conversely, players may encounter fights that are too difficult for their level.
  • Combat Length: Battles can drag on due to slow enemy turns, making combat feel tedious at times.
  • Lack of Quality of Life Features: The absence of quest indicators and some conveniences found in more modern RPGs can lead to frustration and confusion.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Voice Acting: The Classic version lacks complete voice acting, which is present in the Enhanced Edition, detracting from immersion.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Users noted the absence of indicators for quests and other conveniences that make gameplay smoother, as seen in Divinity: Original Sin 2.

  • More Balanced Difficulty: Players expressed a desire for better balancing to ensure that all builds and encounters provide a fair challenge throughout the game.

Summary

  • Overall, while Divinity: Original Sin (Classic) is praised for its depth, creativity, and engaging gameplay, it also faces criticism for its bugs, balance issues, and lack of modern conveniences.
