Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match for PS4 is an action game based on the popular anime series and movies titled Girls und Panzer. The title was published and distributed by Japanese company Bandai Namco. The English version of the game was developed for Eastern Asia markets. It is worth adding that it is the second game based on Girls und Panzer. The first one debuted on PlayStation Vita in 2014.
The Girls und Panzer franchise was born in 2012 as an original anime series that consisted of 12 episodes. It was created by Actas Studios. The show quickly became popular and gained many fans across the world. During the following years the franchise expanded to comics, books and podcasts. In 2015 debuted the first motion picture based on the franchise and six more movies are set to premiere in Japan in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
The story in Girls und Panzer is based on the titular anime series and on the first motion picture. The game takes place in an alternative version of modern Japan where Panzerfahren – competitive duels between panzer squads – is one of the popular team sports. Players participate in a school Panzerfahren league, where teams representing various middle schools face each other. Each team uses tanks that were used during World War II and it represents one of the countries that participated in the conflict (Germany, USA, Italy, China, Great Britain, Finland, USSR). The game features scenarios based on television series, the first cinematic movie and completely new interactions between characters. Additionally, some scenarios enable the players to see events known from anime from a different perspective.
Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match for PS4 is an action game that shouldn’t be confused with classic panzer simulators. The tank destruction model and controls were simplified here, although it is still possible to independently control the left and right track. The action is presented from a third-person perspective. The battles are fought on large maps that represent the locations known from the anime – for example the coastal city of Ooarai. The developers created a few dozen of tank models based on vehicles used during the World War II. The players can additionally modify them by selecting paint color, decorations and emblems.
In addition to singleplayer story mode, the game also features single matches against AI. The developers also implemented a full-fledged multiplayer mode in which two five-person teams fight each other.
Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match for PS4 is powered by a three-dimensional graphics engine that utilizes cel-shading. The developers aimed to recreate the look of the anime as faithfully as possible. All characters are dubbed by voice actors from the anime.
