Mod about Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire, the founder of the Spanish Empire.

Charles von Habsburg (1500-1558) inherited, from his grandparents, most of the Spanish kingdoms and various territories in the Holy Roman Empire, including the Netherlands and the Archduchy of Austria. From his maternal grandmother Isabella he received the Crown of Castille and Leon. Her husband Ferdinand provided the Crown of Aragon, including its possessions in Southern Italy. Meanwhile, his paternal grandfather Maximilian was the Archduke of Austria and Holy Roman Emperor, two titles which Charles was to gain. Finally, Maximilian's first wife, Mary, was to leave Charles with Burgundy and the Netherlands. With this massive empire, Charles became the most powerful man in Europe.

Despite his power, Charles von Habsurg's power was not uncontested. He had to fight all his neighbours, such as the expanding Ottomans, the French, the English and even the Pope to retain his position. Funds had to be raised in some way to maintain the necessary large armies. At the same time, many of the lands he inherited were ruled by powerful families reluctant to let a 'Dutch foreigner' be their king. Berber pirates created frustration by looting the Mediterranean coasts of his Empire, escaping his armies. Also, Charles was to face the first appearance of Martin Luther's heresies, and their spread across Europe. Will his dynasty persist?
