Our next choice is a real Polish classic. Soldat can be described as a platformer version of online shooters. So we have two-dimensional maps and large groups of armed-to-the-teeth soldiers gleefully walking across them. It sounds simple and it is, but at the same time you will find fun here – you can easily take a night off and engage in killing other players.

The production has been in development for several years and offers a high level of refinement and rich content, both in terms of levels and a large selection of gameplay modes. Plus, it still has a large and active community that not only fills up servers – it has also provided thousands of unique maps.

Trackmania Nations Forever

Among racing game enthusiasts, the most popular free-to-play production is Trackmania Nations Forever. This title follows the paths set out by paid installments of the series. So we have a very narrow track where just getting to the finish line causes a lot of problems, let alone doing it with a good time. The driving model is completely arcade, allowing the cars to reach speeds and perform stunts that in the real world would quickly lead to the driver's death.

The game offers extensive content, which is further enhanced by a track editor. All of this is available for free, as the project was conceived as a promotional tool to encourage the purchase of paid installments. Trackmania Nations Forever, however, offers so much fun that many players stick with the free option.

The Dark Mod

Thief II: The Metal Age has been released seventeen years ago, and yet it remains unrivaled in the genre. Even the next two installments of the series were unable to match this classic. Fans had been creating new missions for Thief II for many years, but the technology has aged and it was necessary to switch to something more modern. Thus The Dark Mod was born, a modification to Doom 3.

The project perfectly recreates the mechanisms from the first two installments of the Thief series and offers a similar, slightly steampunk vibe. The modern engine allowed for dynamic lighting and a few other useful features. The whole thing was conceived as tools for fan map makers and now, dozens of high-quality adventures are available. In the stealth-action games category, The Dark Mod is the only entry to match Thief II: The Metal Age.

Initially, the program required Doom 3, but the engine eventually gained open-source status and The Dark Mod became a stand-alone production.

Teeworlds

Teeworlds is an excellent online action game. The idea for the gameplay can be described as Worms without turns. The mechanics of the title resemble platformers. The battles are played out on small two-dimensional and multi-level maps, inhabited by small characters trying to kill each other with a variety of weapons. The fun is enhanced by the fact that each of them has a grappling hook that makes exploration easier.

In all, a maximum of sixteen people can play on a single map. There is a big choice of modes to choose from, some of them classic ones like Deathmatch and Capture The Flag. Plus, the game is known to have a great fan community. Its members are numerous, friendly and very active, so we can easily find partners to play with, and most of them will show a lot of patience when we master the basics of the game.
