Cry of Fear

Cry of Fear is another project in this line-up that began its life as a modification (in this case to Half-Life) and was later turned into a stand-alone production. The story has nothing to do with the universe created by Valve studio. Its action takes place in the real world, which is being attacked by the forces of darkness.
The whole thing is a clear-cut survival horror. The game can be scary, and combat turns out to be very difficult. In addition to the singleplayer mode, the authors also allowed coop for up to four people. The campaign is extensive and provides at least eight hours of entertainment, while modders have also added a sizable set of fresh missions.
In addition, the production was very nicely executed. Most of the graphics are new and present a markedly higher level of execution than the Half-Life objects. Sometimes it's hard to believe that authors have managed to squeeze so much out of this somewhat old engine.
Fistful of Frags

Fistful of Frags is another example of a project that started its life as a mod (in this case for Half-Life 2) and was later converted into a free stand-alone production. The title is an online first-person shooter in an unusual western-stylized universe.
There is a large set of modes and maps to choose from. Virtually all graphic elements are new and present high quality workmanship. The authors heavily modified the shooting mechanics, adding a different aiming system and proper historical weapons that behaves like their real counterparts, so we don't feel like we're playing Half-Life 2 with new skins.
Fistful of Frags enjoys some popularity, so you shouldn't worry about the lack of players to play with, and creators regularly improve their work. Recently they have even added support for mods within Steam Workshop.
Shadow Warrior Classic

Currently, Polish studio Flying Wild Hog is going crazy with new incarnations of the Shadow Warrior brand, but it's also worth revisiting the original title from 1997. You can buy an improved version of it, while the base edition, called Shadow Warrior Classic, is available for free.
The game is a dynamic first-person shooter in which we, as a ninja Warrior, deal with hordes of humans and demons. The game offers big maps, a vast arsenal, and an impressive variety of locations and opponents. Plus, the title turns out to be very funny, with the main character making vicious and politically incorrect comments every now and then. On the day of release, the production was not fully appreciated, mainly due to the outdated graphics at the time. Nevertheless, this is one of the best first-person action games of those years, and if you haven't had a chance to play it so far, it's worth a try.
