15 Most Important Moments From Dragon Ball

Before Pokemon, Naruto and One Piece conquered the world, Goku came to us from the Land of the Cherry Blossom on a magic cloud. Say what you want, but whether it's because of nostalgia or the universality of the story, no other anime moves me as much!

5. Vegeta's sacrifice

  1. Which series is it: Dragon Ball Z
  2. Starring: Vegeta, Fat Buu

You can love the Saiyan prince or hate him. Vegeta's strength lies in his expressiveness, balancing on the verge of exaggeration; his pride and seriousness are to contrast with Goku's ease and directness.

Turning an antagonist into a protagonist is one of Toriyama's most favorite themes. In the case of the Saiyan prince, however, it seems to be the fullest. Tien, Piccolo, Fat Buu or the C-17 and C-18 were becoming the "good" ones relatively quickly. And when that happened, they paused, losing their clarity. In the Buu saga, Vegeta didn't stop at anything (even killing civilians) just to match Goku's strength. It wasn't easy for him to give up his old habits.

His sacrifice is all the more touching. When the Saiyan Prince gives his life for a righteous cause, he is not even sure if he will ever be resurrected. He says goodbye to his son, wife, Goku and Earth. By using the Final Explosion technique, he releases the energy stored in his body, tearing both himself and Buu to shreds. Ultimately, the enemy respawns, but the moment Vegeta dies is one of the most moving in the series. You just have to watch it.

It's over 9000

English dubbing is one way to watch Dragon Ball, but I prefer the original. Masako Nozawa and other seiyu (voice actors from the Land of the Rising Sun) are in my opinion unmatched masters. The English one is based on exaggeration and theatrical screams straight from wrestling. But whatever suits you best. Nevertheless, even if, like me, you are not a fan of English dubbing, you probably know very well the memes with Vegeta crushing his visor in his hand and shouting "It's over 9000!". The Saiyan's reaction to Goku's power level would probably never go viral if it wasn't for this language version.
