Alwa's Awakening is the work of the independent studio Elden Pixels. This production is a representative of the metroidvania genre; its creators drew inspiration from the achievements of classics released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) console.
Alwa's Awakening takes us to the titular land of Alwa, which has been invaded by dark forces. When Zoe, a girl from another world equipped with a magic staff, appears on the spot in unknown circumstances, the inhabitants of Alwa begin to see her arrival as a chance to overcome the danger and to restore the old order in their homeland. The protagonist has no choice but to face the threat and help the oppressed people.
In Alwa's Awakening the action has been shown from the side perspective. As we play, we travel through over four hundred rooms filled with various challenges - these include platform sections, puzzles, and opponents. The different locations are interconnected but in order to reach the majority of places, you will need to acquire a specific object or improve your magic staff with the help of special crystals. Having gained the ability to create uplifting air bubbles or square blocks as additional platforms, the protagonist can bypass traps and solve puzzles, so that previously inaccessible chambers open up to her over time. Enemies can be attacked from a distance or you can engage them in melee; among these foes there are bosses with significantly greater health pools and attack capabilities.
Alwa's Awakening has been maintained in a retro style, which is reflected by its two-dimensional graphics (the pixelart gives the impression of being taken directly from the 8-bit era), the chiptune soundtrack, and a high level of difficulty (the heroine has only three lives).
