An expansion to the brutal and fast-paced Hexen-inspired boomer shooter. Amid Evil: The Black Labyrinth DLC features larger levels, new enemies and weapons (including spiked gauntlets), as well as logic puzzles and platforming levels that require precision and timing.
Four years after the release of Amid Evil, a brutal FPS inspired by Hexen, the independent studio Indefatigable has released an expansion titled The Black Labyrinth. This four-hour add-on for the boomer shooter serves as a narrative prequel, presenting the story of the Champion's acquisition of the Axe of the Black Labyrinth.
The characteristic melee weapon from the original is absent for plot reasons, but instead, the main character is equipped with spiked gloves (similar to those from Hexen), with which he bloodily eliminate enemies. The gloves are also useful for him to hit the switches. Among the new arsenal, there is also an equivalent of the BFG 9000 from the Doom series in the form of a scythe that fires a wide stream of energy - it is called the Voidsplitter.
The hordes of encountered opponents include jumping enemies, a dragon as a boss, flying monsters, archers, crystal dogs breathing fire, as well as tall knights with shields that deflect projectiles. The levels containing secrets, larger than those from the original, include rain-shrouded marshlands and a massive metal fortress standing in a red mountain range, towards which giant metal daggers are flying.
Later levels of The Black Labyrinth DLC include logic puzzles (near which there are usually hints) and platforming stages that require precise jumps and timing.
Amid Evil: The Black Labyrinth is powered by Unreal Engine 4 and features a retro aesthetic, utilizing colorful lighting and soft shadows. The game's levels are characterized by "twisted" geometry. The base version of the game is required to run the DLC.
