Plot
The action of Aralon: Sword and Shadow takes place in quite a standard fantasy land - in the titular kingdom of Aralon. The kingdom stands on the verge of annihilation due to the traitors hidden among the servants of the monarchy. We play the role of the descendant of the murdered captain of the royal guard. We are the last chance to save the whole nation from tyrants wishing to take over the kingdom. The story is simple, but it doesn't interfere with fun, because the game is more about freedom of exploration and fulfilling tasks rather than a linear story.
Mechanics
Aralon: Sword and Shadow starts with creating our own character. There are three races to choose from - people, elves and trolls, then we decide on gender, and finally, we choose one out of the five available classes: rogue, warrior, paladin, scout or magician. Then we set out into the world to have adventures and gain glory. The action is observed from the third or first person perspective. The world is made in 3D and impresses with its size and openness. Besides the main storyline, players can also complete a multitude of optional side tasks.
The combat system is based on the player's dexterity - we dodge, attack and block manually. This means that the outcome of the battles depends both on the character's stats and the player's dexterity. The game also offers an advanced character progression system where each class has its own skill tree.
The authors put a lot of work into recreating as many elements from PC RPGs as possible. Enemies are divided into factions, and our actions influence the balance of power between them. The player can collect herbs, brew potions, craft weapons, fish, light fires and use eight types of mounts, from horses to dragons. There is also an option of hiring mercenaries to support us during the most difficult missions.
