Arthurian Legends is an old-school first-person action game inspired by productions from the 1980s. It is a debut of an independent studio Scolaro Games.

Plot

As the title suggests, the game takes a lot of inspiration from Arthurian legends. Its action takes place in a fantasy version of early medieval Britain, where historical truth is combined with myths. The campaign takes place before the rise of Camelot - during the reign of Uther Pendragon. This monarch used magic to win the heart of the woman he loved, and when she died he blamed the same powers for her death. He banned witchcraft and banished the followers of the old deities from Albion.

When the action of the game begins Britain is in a terrible state. The land is plagued by an unnatural crop failure, dark forces terrorize the population and, what's worse, the islands are being invaded by Saxons, supported by magicians expelled by Pendragon's decree. We take on the role of an ordinary warrior who will try to stop the triumphant march of the invaders.

Mechanics

Arthurian Legends is an action game which refers to the PC games from the 1980s. The events are observed from a first-person perspective, and the game is mainly about fighting using an arcade combat system. The mechanics of the clashes is relatively simple - the player can perform only one type of attack and defend against blows with a shield.

Shields slowly degrade, forcing you to find new ones, which limits defensive tactics. An additional variation is that raising the shield a moment before an enemy attack hits reduces damage and stuns enemies for a moment. During the game we also use runes to activate various useful magic effects, such as freezing targets, creating fireballs or calling down lightning from the sky.

There are ten types of weapons at the player's disposal, each of which has unique characteristics and purpose. The game also has a large variety of enemies. During the campaign we fight against human soldiers, demon mages, skeletons or giant spiders, among others.

Game modes

Arthurian Legends allows only to play solo. Apart from the story campaign we can also test our skills in arena battles and horde mode, where we have to face more and more powerful waves of enemies.

Technical aspects

The game was made in a style inspired by productions from the first half of the 90's. The game world is 3D, but many of its elements are in 2D. Developers also decided on an unusual step and the enemies and the main character were made by transforming actors in costumes into animated sprites.
