Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box for PC, PS3 and X360 is the next installment in the extremely popular racing games series. The title was at first released for the seventh generation’s consoles (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) and then for PC. The developers decided to refresh the classic gameplay formula by using technology that has never been used before. Most of all, the physical engine was greatly improved and now it lacks any scripts and affects all three-dimensional objects. In addition to that, the number of pieces of the virtual vehicles that can be damaged was increased up to almost one hundred. This allows the players to, for example, cut the car in half or change a coupé into a cabriolet.

Gameplay

The game takes place on the large area of Paradise City – a fictional metropolis which contains, among other things, an island with an airport, a bay with skyscrapers and hills that are free of any infrastructure. The player’s task is mostly spectacular driving and breaking the traffic regulations. One can drive against more than thirty various rivals and unlock new vehicles while progressing in the game. The vehicles aren’t licensed, but they are based on such cars like American muscle cars (for example the Ford Mustang) and European machines like Ferrari Enzo. During the races the player has great freedom of movement and he should look for shortcuts. Of course, it is very enjoyable to play the game with other players through the Internet.

  • Destruction and Crashes: The game excels in delivering satisfying and visually impressive crash mechanics, which are a hallmark of the Burnout series.
  • Variety of Events: A diverse range of race types and challenges, such as Road Rage and Stunt Runs, keeps gameplay fresh and engaging.
  • Great Soundtrack: The music selection, featuring rock, punk, and electronic tracks, enhances the gaming experience and fits well with the high-energy racing.
  • Content Richness: The Ultimate Box edition includes all DLC, adding new vehicles, night driving, and quality-of-life improvements, making it the most complete version of the game.

The main cons of the game

  • Loose Controls: Some players find the controls too forgiving, which can detract from the precision expected in racing games, leading to a less satisfying driving experience.
  • No Split-Screen Multiplayer: The game lacks local multiplayer options, which is a significant drawback for players who enjoy couch co-op racing.
  • Aging Graphics: While the game was visually appealing at launch, many users feel the graphics have not aged well compared to modern titles, appearing dated.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Some players noted that the open-world format can lead to repetitive gameplay, especially with limited event types and predictable race endings.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • GPS Navigation: The open-world design lacks clear guidance for races, making navigation confusing and frustrating, particularly for those unfamiliar with the map.
  • Robust Online Multiplayer: Users expressed disappointment with the absence of comprehensive online multiplayer features, especially since the servers are down.
  • More Structured Progression: Some players miss the traditional structured progression found in earlier Burnout titles, such as championship modes or storylines.
  • Enhanced Vehicle Customization: A desire for more customization options for cars, including the ability to change paint jobs without affecting repairs, was noted.
  • Improved AI and Challenge: Users pointed out that the AI can be unchallenging, and some expressed a desire for a more competitive racing experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box is celebrated for its fun, chaotic racing and open-world design, it also has its share of criticisms regarding controls, graphics, and multiplayer options.
