Despite the criticism, Chernobyl: Terrorist Attack, released in 2011, has achieved considerable popularity on the Russian market. This encouraged the publisher - Play-publishing company and Torun's development studio Silden to prepare a fully-fledged continuation.

Chernobyl 2: Return to Zone takes place shortly after the events presented in the first part. It turns out that stopping terrorists from destroying the protective sarcophagus around the remains of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant reactors has not ended the problem. In fact, the actions of the bombers were only meant to divert attention away from the main purpose, which was to obtain the radioactive materials needed to construct the so-called dirty bomb. Captain Yuri Ryakov is once again facing a threat to the world. This time, however, he can count on the support of Fedor Strushyn.
