An action game developed by Tribute Games with two-player multiplayer cooperation in mind. The gameplay is based on an incredibly simple formula — combat takes place on an arena that spans across the entire screen, which is then invaded by subsequent waves of enemies, such as orcs, skeletons, and goblins. In Curses 'N Chaos, the player assumes the role of a mighty warrior or an arcane arts mistress.
Curses 'N Chaos is a two-dimensional minimalistic action game for PC and PSV in which players fight subsequent waves of enemies. The title was developed by Tribute Games, an independent Canadian studio. The developer is well-known thanks to its award-winning and well-received games: Mercenary Kings and Wizorb. Both productions were inspired by classical 16-bit console bestsellers and tried to recreate their unique atmosphere. Curses 'N Chaos follows the same path, paying a tribute to many platformer games from arcade machines.
The gameplay formula of Curses 'N Chaos is incredibly simple. The entire game is set in a level that spans the entire screen. Subsequent waves of differently armed opponents and monsters, such as goblins, skeletons, orcs, and the like, appear on it, while the player assumes the role of a character that has to survive as long as possible under their onslaught. There are two different heroes to choose from: an arcane arts mistress and a fierce warrior. Both are different in terms of their fighting style.
We have a limited amount of time to eliminate each wave of enemies, and should we exceed it, our characters die. Defeated enemies drop items, which let us regenerate health and offer various bonuses, as well as coins. Between battles, we can visit the store where we can buy potions for the acquired money. The most expensive and powerful of them all allows us to fight the final boss.
The game was designed with two-player cooperation in mind.
Both the game’s graphics and music seem as if they were taken straight out of productions developed in the first half of the ‘90s or the late ‘80s. The style of Curses 'N Chaos for PC and PSV should therefore appeal to retro fans.

Curses N' Chaos is a good arena brawler that throws you right into the action. It may not be the most graphical intensive games out there, but Tribute Games has created something that you can get engrossed in really quickly. You will die a lot to make progress, and that may not be for everyone, but if you like your brawlers, then Curses 'N Chaos is certainly worth a look.

All up, Curses & Chaos boasts tighter mechanics and an overall more polished presentation than contemporary retro-themed indie games. Although I wish it did a better job of being captivating for more than a stage or two at a time, those exhausted with 2D brawlers ought to give it a go because of its unorthodox gameplay quirks and pulsating atmosphere.

It showcases classic gameplay in its purest form, demanding a level of skill and timing not present in many games recently. Defeat never feels unfair; if anything, it encourages the player to pick the controller back up and improve. The music is a joy, and the canvas the art is weaved through is testament to a team who have created a highly addictive and polished game.
