DomiNations for AND and iOS is an interesting strategy game from Big Huge Games. The studio was established in 2000, but has been closed in 2012 after a long wander from owner to owner. It has been revived two years later, and this game was its first work of its second life. Tim Train and Brian Reynolds – founders of the company, meaning it returned to its rightful owners, have done developer’s reincarnation. Big Huge Games has become famous mainly for Rise of Nations – a real time strategy game series started in 2003. It also developed Catan, Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties and helped with production Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning.
DomiNations is the same game on Android and iOS. Both versions offer the same mechanics, controls, nearly identical visuals etc.
DomiNations for AND and iOS is a battle strategy game. Players take control of rising civilizations (like Britons, Romans, Japanese or Greek), trying to increase their strength and lead them to the world domination. Game starts during the Stone Age and then – through systematic progress and discovering new technologies – goes through all of the major ages of human’s history. New eras (like space conquest) appear as post-release updates.
Like Sid Meier’s Civilizaton series, the game is not short on wonders (e.g. Egyptian pyramids and Statue of Freedom) and historical characters (including Alexander the Great, Cleopatra and Napoleon Bonaparte) that help players develop constantly. Creators stressed out on technological progress, with new inventions leading to more advanced eras. Alliances with other uses are also important part of the game, with the conquest of local areas being one of major parts of gameplay.
DomiNations combines features known from 4X strategy game series Civilization (which isn’t surprising considering that Brian Reynolds is one of the founders of Firaxis, and a cocreator of well-received Alpha Centauri), as well as some elements of popular mobile strategy titles like Clash of Clans (building fortifications, defensive towers, conquests etc.).
Each version of DomiNations, including the AND and iOS’s one, offers attractive, two-dimensional visuals in high resolution. The game stands out with highly detailed objects and good-looking animations of units.
