Although tactical shooters and survival games have some things in common (they require focus and prudent action), it is rare that developers choose to combine both genres in a single project. Such a hybrid is Echoes Below, the work of independent German studio Echo Division.
In Echoes Below, we view the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). During the gameplay, we play the role of a soldier and find ourselves in an archipelago, which is an open world with a day and night cycle and changing weather conditions and even seasons. In addition to dense forests, it is formed by the waters surrounding the islands, as well as towns and bunkers and other military facilities.
It can be traversed on foot or with the help of vehicles and machines, such as off-road vehicles, boats and helicopters. They are not only means of transportation, but also a kind of mobile storage. However, they require fuel to operate, and when they are damaged, they need to be repaired.
There is a paramilitary sect prowling the archipelago, which has taken us into its sights. Clashes with enemies are therefore an important part of the gameplay, and they occur both while traversing the game world and in situations when we defend ourselves from them or attack their outposts ourselves.
On the battlefield we primarily use firearms. Its range includes assault rifles, pistols and submachine guns, among others, and we expand it as we progress, collecting randomly generated loot during exploration. In addition, the guns can be modified using, among other things, silencers, scopes, laser sights and other add-ons that change their characteristics and increase their capabilities.
Also indispensable is a drone, which allows you to look at the battlefield from above and conduct reconnaissance, as well as designate targets for firing. We control it directly using the PDA.
When fighting sectarians, we should not forget to control the condition of the character. We check her parameters - hunger, thirst, body temperature and fatigue level - on the smartwatch. Their presence requires us to gather food supplies (its source is, for example, hunting) and drinking water, prepare meals, and build shelters.
The latter vary, depending on what materials we use. Although they initially take the form of makeshift camps, over time they become real fortresses fenced with barriers and equipped with automatic turrets, minefields or mortars.
We are not doomed to cross alone, as there are other soldiers trapped in the archipelago. We find them by traversing the islands, and when they join our squad (we can have up to three companions with us), they provide us with indispensable support. Among them are snipers and medics, while the ability to give them commands (such as breaking down doors, patrolling, barrage fire) makes our combat capabilities increase significantly. During breaks from fighting enemies, they can assist us in other activities, such as building or guarding the camp.
Echoes Below can be played solo or in cooperative mode over the Internet.
Echoes Below takes us to an archipelago overrun by a paramilitary sect. During the gameplay we play the role of a soldier who is stranded on the islands, losing contact with his squad. His task is to find comrades, confront the cultists, and investigate the interdimensional force manifesting in the area.
