Epic Chef is a three-dimensional game observed from the third person perspective, seasoned with humour and absurd situations that will satisfy the fans of Terry Prachett's work, because it was his work that inspired the studio to create this title.

Epic Chef is a recreational game in which our goal is to become a master of the kitchen and to this end we sow and harvest, craft objects and cook delicious dishes. The game is the responsibility of the independent Infinigon Games studio, and its release is the responsibility of Team17 Digital, known for such games as Overcooked and Blasphemous.

Mechanics

In the game we play the role of Zest, an ambitious cook who sets out on an eventful journey, the goal of which is to become the greatest master of cooking! However, in order to win this title, we have to take part in numerous competitions, held on a sporting basis, where the result of the competition is influenced by the decision of the jury testing our specialties. There are a lot of enemies who are really talented and knowledgeable in their field, not to mention a choosy jury, which should be satisfied with their preferences. We make up the dishes ourselves from a large number of ingredients, which gives us countless combinations, but we have to get them ourselves. And it's not about buying them, because we'll go with the bags. The idea is to become self-sufficient, which is why we gain these ingredients by working hard on the land outside our property. We sow, irrigate and harvest various types of plants, which can then be used on a plate. In addition, we establish electric breeding of various animal species, in which we find cows, but also unicorns. Some of the ingredients and access to the various facilitations of the life of an aspiring farmer-cook are gained over time by expanding our property, improving it and enriching it with additional machines allowing us to, for example, convert the ingredients into other goods or help us compose a new, tasty recipe.

For being as strange and bloated as it is, Epic Chef is a very engaging experience. While there are an almost frightening number of different mechanics involved, they all work together in interesting ways to create a very cohesive experience. Some people will like specific aspects of Epic Chef over others, but the way in which they work together means that very few are going to have trouble engaging with the whole, at least on some level.

Nintendo Life: 6 / 10 by Oliver Reynolds

Epic Chef is heaped with charm and humour that will undoubtedly put a smile on your face as you start your life as Ambrosia's hottest chef. Unfortunately, while the cooking and farming mechanics are simple enough to grasp, the bloated nature of the game makes every task feel more arduous than it needs to be. Add to this the needlessly lengthy dialogue and bizarre limitations around the save function, and Epic Chef feels like a game that can't quite match up with the other life sims available on the Switch. It's not unenjoyable, just more Little Chef than MasterChef.

Epic Chef should appeal to fans of games like Story of Seasons or Stardew Valley. It takes a bit to get going and some of its systems are poorly designed but I still grew quite fond of growing my crops, helping out the townsfolk, and conquering battles to become to top chef around. It’s not the best game in this farming/life simulator genre but it’s certainly worth a look.
