The debut production of the independent studio Snow Arc that combines elements of RPG and survival horror. Frozen State takes place in a devastated Siberian town where the Soviet authorities conducted experiments on advanced extraterrestrial technology. The situation got out of control, though, when the citizens had been attacked by an unknown parasite that turned humans into mutants.
Frozen State for PC is the debut production of a small, independent studio called Snow Arc. The game combines elements of RPG and survival horror, and its action is set in a devastated Siberian town inhabited by monstrous results of experiments, which employed advanced extraterrestrial technology.
The plot revolves around mysterious events that took place in Tunguska. In the world created for the purposes of Frozen State, an unidentified alien object fell from the sky on that region of Siberia. A Soviet expedition sent with the mission of finding the crashed vessel found technologies that could change the humanity forever. Soviets got their hands on cybernetics, first computers, self-replenishing fuel, lasers and wireless communication devices, among other things. Research on these findings was conducted in the said city, hidden in the Siberian wastelands. The fruitful exploitation of the technological gains was disturbed by an unexpected accident, though: an alien parasite attacked the town’s population and started to cause mutations that turned humans into gruesome hybrids. The situation got out of control so the Soviet authorities decided to bombard the town to stop the spread of the infection. the action of the game starts three years later among the ruins, where a handful of monsters and survivors are still alive.
In the game, we assume the role of one of the bombing’s survivor and traverse the open world. We have freedom in exploration and in decision making, and our choices influence the game world. The available area can be explored with various vehicles, as well. We are accompanied by robots in our journey — they carry our equipment and provide additional light. The latter is of great importance since the general atmosphere of the title is grim and locations are often dark, with ruthless bandits and bloodthirsty mutants lurking in the shadows. We can fight them either in real time or in a turn-based tactical mode — players can freely switch between them. For defeating the enemy and performing quests, we aren’t awarded any experience points, though, since the developers — in order to avoid artificially limiting the players — abandoned that aspect of character development.
In Frozen State for PC, we can also play in multiplayer mode that lets players cooperate or compete in the destroyed Siberian town. Characters can traverse ruins and face threats together or on the contrary — fight for the resources left in the rubble.
Frozen State is powered by Unity 3D Pro. Therefore, the graphics do not use the latest effects but the developers successfully built an adequately dark, heavy atmosphere nevertheless.
