iOS is the name for the operating system which Apple is using in its own smartphones and tablets (iPhones and iPads) since 2007. iOS is a more popular platform among the mobile developers than Android, despite the fact that the latter is used in a greater number of mobile devices. Apple’s success is a result of bigger revenues for developers creating iOS games and greater performance of iPhones and iPads, among other things.

Secret Files: Tunguska (iOS)

A classic, two-dimensional point-and-click adventure game developed by German studio Fusionsphere Systems. The story of the game is closely related to the famous Tunguska event which occurred in 1908 and which to this day was never fully explained. There are a few theories explaining what occurred there and some of them are quite unusual. The main protagonist of the game is Nina Kalenkov, a Russian girl living in Germany.

Limbo (iOS)

Very unique two-dimensional platformer from the independent developer PlayDead. We play as a small boy who sets on dangerous journey to save his sister. He traverses surrealistic landscapes, coming across many deadly traps and running away from monstrous spider, which follow him tirelessly. In terms of gameplay, Limbo borrows from classic platform titles, though not without adding a few original features.

Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse (iOS)

The fifth installment of a classic series of point and click adventure games whose origins can be traced back to 1996. The player travels around the planet while leading a pair of heroes that solve the puzzles of old. The game was developed thanks to a crowdfunding campaign at Kickstarter.

A sequel to the detective adventure visual novel released in 2010 by Spike Chunsoft. In Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair the player assumes the role of a completely new protagonist named Hajime Hinata. He is accepted to an elite high school despite the fact that he cannot remember what he did to earn that honor. During one of the school trips the class of the protagonist is imprisoned on a tropical island.

Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon (iOS)

A turn-based strategy game set in a popular science-fiction universe, developed by Slitherine, an esteemed studio specialized in strategy titles. The plot is focused on a great war of the planet Armageddon, in which the allied forces of the Space Marines and the Imperial Guard fight against the army of orks led by Ghazghkull Thraka. The story campaign consists of 35 missions and is non-linear to some extent, as it develops depending on your actions.

XCOM: Enemy Within (iOS)

First huge add-on to the tactical strategy game, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, released in 2012. Created by the developer team at Firaxis Games, the expansion introduces many new features to basic game. One of the most important among them is a new resource – meld, a type of microscopic, robotic organisms that can modify human genotype. This allows humans to improve their body and even integrate mechanical parts into themselves.

I Am Bread (iOS)

Yet another joke simulation game, a genre which, contrary to any logical reasoning, keeps gaining crowds of fans. The hero of this game, developed by an independent team at Bossa Studios, is a slice of bread, and the player’s job is to take it all the way to a toaster. Gameplay mechanics in I Am Bread are pretty complex, the biggest difficulty being controlling all four corners of the toast separately. With these mechanics the “hero” can perform simple moves on any flat surface.

Crypt of the NecroDancer lets us play as a girl named Cadence, who sets on a journey to find her missing father. It leads her to the mysterious crypt ruled by an evil demon known as NecroDancer. It casts an unusual curse on the protagonist, making her heart always beat in rhythm of a music.

Unsung Story (iOS)

A tactical Japanese RPG developed by a team led by Yasumi Matsuno, the creator of such classic games as Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII, and Vagrant Story. The action of Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians is set in a fantastical world torn by wars. The campaign tells us the story of the 70-year-long war, the direction of which has been set by the long forgotten warriors. The player assumes the role of one of those warriors.

Another installment in the Need for Speed racing game series. This time, the game brings an unexpected twist, for a typically arcade series turns towards realism. The new developer, by the name of Slightly Mad Studios, created new driving physics that focus on simulation rather than arcade gameplay. Similar to 2007's ProStreet, races take place on closed racing circuits. The player can participate in the entire season of races, taking place both on fictional and real circuits.

Players act as hackers, who steal the classified data of powerful companies. This takes place in virtual reality that is so closely connected to users’ brains that the most effective defense systems can turn an unfortunate hacker into vegetable.

Gangstar New Orleans (iOS)

An open world action game developed by Gameloft. The new installment of the Gangstar series takes us to New Orleans, with a mission to take over the local underworld. Similarly to the previous installments, the game is built around the story mode, including various adrenaline-inducing missions, as well as optional side errands. The action is seen from a third person perspective, while our hero can travel on foot, or use one of the numerous cars found in the game.
