Independent Polish studio Transhuman Design, founded by Michal Marcinkowski, the creator of the legendary Soldat, has specialized in creating action games. This includes Jackal, realized in a style reminiscent of the bestselling Hotline Miami, but also Quentin Tarantino's films, among others.

Gameplay

In Jackal, events are viewed in a top-down view. The action of this title takes place in 1970s Las Vegas, and here we play the role of a drugged-out hitman hunting the Mafia. The game's driving force is heists, during which we traverse the streets of the city of sin and facilities like casinos (the locations consist of procedurally generated rooms) and fight numerous adversaries.

The main pros of the game

  • Gameplay Mechanics: Many users praised the gameplay mechanics, describing them as fun, fast-paced, and satisfying, with a strong emphasis on physics-driven combat. The ability to use the environment as a weapon adds depth to the gameplay.
  • Visuals and Aesthetic: The game's art style, visuals, and overall aesthetic were frequently highlighted as attractive and fitting for the 1970s theme. The cutscenes and character designs received positive mentions.
  • Soundtrack: The original music was noted as excellent, enhancing the overall experience and atmosphere of the game.
  • Replayability: The game offers replay value through random level generation, gameplay modifiers, and a speedrun mode, allowing for varied experiences in subsequent playthroughs.
  • Narrative and Voice Acting: While opinions varied on the story's quality, several players appreciated the unique narrative style and the engaging voice acting, particularly the interactions with the character Anubis.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Length: Many reviews mentioned that the game is quite short, often completed in under three hours, which some players felt was not worth the full price.
  • Repetitive Level Design: Some users criticized the level design, particularly the mechanic where enemies spawn after clearing a level, which could lead to frustrating situations.
  • Combat Issues: Several players experienced issues with hitboxes, weapon mechanics, and overall control responsiveness, which led to feelings of inconsistency and frustration during gameplay.
  • Story and Writing: While some enjoyed the story, others found it lacking depth and coherence, with some describing it as confusing or unengaging.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Checkpoints: Users expressed a desire for more checkpoints, especially in challenging sections of the game, as dying could lead to repetitive gameplay.
  • More Diverse Level Design: There were calls for larger, more varied maps that don't rely on enemy spawn mechanics, allowing for a more straightforward clearing of levels.
  • Improved Combat Mechanics: Some players hoped for better integration of special abilities and a more fluid combat experience, suggesting that passive abilities might have worked better than the current system.
  • Content and Updates: A few reviews indicated that the game could benefit from additional content, such as a level editor or more robust competitive modes, to enhance longevity and replayability.

Summary

  • In summary, "Jackal" has a solid foundation with engaging gameplay and a unique aesthetic, but it suffers from issues related to length, repetitiveness, and combat mechanics that some players found frustrating. There is also a desire for additional content and features to enhance the overall experience.
