John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is a first-person shooter based on the works of John Carpenter, an American director mainly known for his 1980s horror movies (including The Fog, The Thing and Christine). It was developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment.

Plot

The game is set in the near future. A failed attempt to control Earth's nuclear energy has released an eldritch monster - the Sludge God. The beast starts terraforming the area, destroying the soil and turning people into zombies.

The last hope humanity has against the monster is the scientist who's freed it in the first place. In order to carry out his plan, he needs a group of mercenaries. They're all, unfortunately, too expensive, and so he must make do with the titular Toxic Commandos.

We played John Carpenter's Toxic Commando. Successor to L4D surprises with spectacular hordes of zombies from World War Z

The „toxic” commando team aspires to become the new Left 4 Dead. And indeed - the foundations of co-op gameplay are solid, hordes of zombies are spectacular. But is that enough for the game to be noticed once it releases?

Gaming Nexus: 7.5 / 10 by Jason Dailey

Dated mission structure and zombie design hold back Toxic Commando to an extent, but Saber Interactive still executed on a couple of fresh ideas. The Swarm Engine's impressive zombie hordes, satisfying gunplay, and MudRunner-style vehicle physics that shouldn't work but do are reason enough to grab a few friends and start blasting the undead.

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is not without its flaws - but it fulfils its promise of chaotic and messy fun to jump into and enjoy with mates.

Worth Playing: 8.5 / 10 by Cody Medellin

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is a solid fun time. It isn't a revolutionary game in the four-player co-op genre, but all of the changes it makes have a positive impact on the experience. The performance is very good all around, and despite having a linear storyline to follow, it's replayable thanks to the classes, skill trees, and number of things to level up. For those looking for a return to a co-op experience that's about more shooting and less thinking, Toxic Commando is it.
