The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Gameplay: Players praise the fast-paced, tight controls and satisfying mechanics, making the game highly addictive and enjoyable.
  • Variety and Replayability: The procedural generation of levels, along with a wide range of weapons, upgrades, and bosses, keeps the gameplay fresh and encourages multiple runs.
  • Challenging Difficulty: The game offers a true hard mode that is well-designed, providing a fair challenge without merely increasing enemy health and damage.
  • Unique Boss Design: Many players highlight the creativity and challenge of the bosses, which are seen as some of the best in any game.
  • Great Soundtrack and Aesthetic: The music and pixel art style are frequently mentioned as standout features, contributing to the overall experience.

The main cons of the game

  • RNG Dependence: Some players feel that the game relies too heavily on random number generation (RNG) for weapon and upgrade availability, which can lead to frustrating runs.
  • Ammo Management Issues: The limited ammo for weapons is criticized as a poor design choice, making it feel tedious and punishing during runs.
  • Lack of Variety in Runs: A few reviews mention that the game can feel repetitive over time due to limited weapon and upgrade diversity.
  • Visual Clarity: As the game progresses, some players find it challenging to distinguish between projectiles, leading to confusion and difficulty in later stages.
  • Meta-Progression Concerns: The progression system, which ties upgrades to a shop rather than achievements, is seen as grindy and less rewarding.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Weapon Variety: Users express a desire for a broader range of weapons and upgrades to enhance build diversity and reduce reliance on RNG.
  • Improved Clarity for Mechanics: Some players want clearer explanations of game mechanics and power-ups to avoid confusion during runs.
  • Persistent Item Drops: The inability for item drops to persist after leaving a room is mentioned as a frustrating design choice.
  • More Meaningful Choices: Players hope for more impactful decisions regarding upgrades and perks, rather than feeling forced to choose certain options.
  • Better Accessibility Features: Some users suggest the addition of options like auto-aim for players who struggle with twin-stick controls.

Summary

  • Overall, Star of Providence is celebrated for its polished gameplay and depth but has received constructive criticism regarding its reliance on RNG, ammo management, and meta-progression systems.
